Need help with a player wanting a 2h bludg weapon

First Post
I have a new player (to DnD) sitting at my table this Sunday. Last week when he was explaining his character to me he said that he wanted his character to, "be the big guy, that walks into a room and everyone stares at him." After coming up with a solid background (he decided to be Earh Genasi) he explained, "he should have a huge warhammer. some massive 2 handed thing."

I had boasted that 2nd ed had a lot of "you can't" and 3rd ed has a lot of "sure, you can do that (with a cost)." Help me keep my word :)

I decided to make an exotic weapon called a Greathammer that is completely identical to a Greataxe except that it does bludgeoning damage.

I stopped by my local comic book store (woohoo Comic Swap) and checked out Arms and Armor; it had lots of cool stuff and lots of crap but nothing that resembled what we had in mind. (It did have some kinda Ogre Club or whatever but that wasn't quite right.) I checked out S&F and it had some okay stuff but once again nothing close to my Greathammer idea.

I'm doubting myself and the idea, thinking there has to be a reason a greathammer idea isn't on paper anywhere.

Another thing I thought before I began to doubt this whole idea: If he's spending an exotic weapon proficiency feat for this thing, shouldn't it be a bit better than a Greataxe?

Thank you for your time and any advice,
Telor

1d10/crit x3 for martial, 2d6/crit x3 for exotic.

That's the ticket right there. Good weapon as a martial prof. with a nice little damage bonus if you take exotic.

I think I might have a few Greathammer wielding guys in my next adventure.

Consider this 'yoinked'

Greathammer as an Exotic Weapon

I admit I have an NPC for whom I need a bigger version of the warhammer for. Wanting to make it a little more different, since he ended up purchasing it from a very talented weaponsmith in a city famous for its weapons I created 'Fwyluc's Greathammer' (after its creator):

Fwyluc's Greathammer: 1d10 damage, 20/x3 critical, and does both bludgeoning and piercing damage (imagine a weapon that has a large head that has a narrow piercing point that flairs out to a very heavy head, and repeats it on the other side of the long haft). Oh, and its encumbrance is 15lbs, being made all of steel.

I allowed it as a 2-handed weapon with Martial Weapons Proficiency, or as a 1-handed weapon with an appropriate Exotic Weapons Proficiency. Once he had that EWP, I also allowed him to apply is Weapon Focus: warhammer to that weapon also.

Right now its been enchanted with a basic +1, but it's slated for being upgraded to a +1 thundering hammer some time soon.

Couldn't you just "size up" a regular warhammer as per the size changes rule for weapons in the DMG? According to p. 162, you would then have a large warhammer that does 2d6 damage, with x3 crit, and still is a martial weapon (but then the Greataxe is martial, not exotic). It would be two-handed.
How important is it to make it exotic?
