Need help with ideas for a divine war?

First Post
Basically, IMC(again, I'm thinking way in advance, it's just the way I work) the characters going epic-level also has an outpouring of energy tat awakens the Elder Gods; the Great Old Ones of the Cthulhu Mythos. I needed some suggestions for their servants and worshippers(the PCs have the option to either stay on the MAterial Plane or go out into the Planes; if they come back after a year or more to the Material Plane, they find it radically changed by the presence of the Elder Gods). Specifically, I need some ideas for Prestige Classes for the human and non-human servants of the Elder Gods, and some ideas for magic items gifted upon them from their gods. Any help would be appreciated. Thanx.

The Epic Level book has a template for a pseudo-creature, they give the example of the pseudotroll. There's a weaker version in the Tome and Blood splatbook. Those are two ideas of the top of my head.

Thanx for the start-off, I've got Tome and Blood already.

Also, I noticed that I didn't explain the Divine War tie-in. It's gonna be a HUGE fight, between the Gods, The Demons, The Devils, and The Elders. Basically, The Gods aren't strong enough to be able to fight the Elders off alone, so they have to enlist the aid of powerful mortals(the PCs, and a few NPCs), as well as getting some of those powerful people(the PCs) to go and try to negotiate a truce in the Blood War to get help in the Divine War. After the Divine War is over, I've already got a plan for another adventure of truly epic proportions: restart the Blood War between the Demons and the Devils nice eh?

Maybe this suggestion isn't quite what you wanted, but...

If you want to maintain the proper "Mythos feeling", I suggest the following:

Make the fights extremely tough (well, this goes without saying). Most of the Great Old Ones cannot be destroyed, but just temporarily banished. When the Great Old Ones finally are defeated (at staggeringly huge costs), it should be extremely clear to the PCs that this is only a temporary thing, and that eternal vigilance is needed by the entire alliance to make sure the GOOs stay in their eternal slumber.

Then watch the horror in their faces as all their allies declare this temporary release as a "clear and decisive victory" and fall back to squabbling and warfare between them as if nothing had happened!

If that doesn't teach them the meaning of "cosmic horror", then nothing will. :D

Au contraire Jurgen, that might be a good idea, but for right now, I'm not thinking too much about "After the War" except that now they'd be left with a Catch-22: Either allow things to fall back into place and risk the Elder Gods being released again, or else work to hold the alliance together, and risk the combined might of the Abyss and the nine Hells being brought to bear upon the Material Plane and the Heavens. I foresee great roleplaying in the future. Any other suggestions from people?

I remember a neat trick I once pulled when creating a magic item:

I introduced a "staff of the lich", which was basically a "staff of the archmage" - but its powers not only used up charges, it also drained an equal number of Constitution points - and these points could not be cured through magic, but were regained by one point for each passing day.

Use something similar - let them use powerful magic items, but each use/charge also drains a point of Wisdom, which can only be recovered through rest, and not magical healing (if you want to be nasty - and considering this is the Cthulhu Mythos we are talking about, you should - you could also rule that wishes and miracles don't help, either...).

Of course, NPCs who have completely gone over to the "Dark Side" - the Mythos forces - don't suffer from this...
