need help with invisibility

ShadowMaster

First Post
Hi everybody,

I would like to have some help about how to resolve a combat where either a hero or an NPC cast invisibility. What are the chances for any one to find the invisible character (silent or if he cast shield)?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

A Spot check at DC 20 lets you know that an active invisible creature is nearby, but you don't know exactly where and you still can't see it. An opposed Listen check could tell you what direction it is from you, but won't tell you what square.

If you have the ELH, it also has rules for Epic skill check results, though you don't have to be epic to actually get these results. They're just really good checks. These DCs are also in the new DMG, on page 295, under Invisibility. Here it is for Spot...

DC 30 - Notice presence of unmoving, living invisible creature.
DC 40 - Notice presense of inanimate invisible object
DC 40 - Notice presence of unmoving, unliving invisible creature
+20 to DC to actually pinpoint the exact location of the creature.

So, an unmoving, living invisible creature could be noticed with Spot check of 30 and could be pinpointed with a Spot check of 50.

The Dungeon Master's Guide has some good rules about this matter. There are rules about listening and what happens when you get attacked by an invisible opponent. Also rules about searching the area with outstretched arms and such.

Usually you simply make listen checks against DC 20 + range, if someone is not being silent (i.e. moving silently), which is automatically the case, when casting spells or attacking.

DMG 3.0 has the rules on page 78, don't know for sure where they are in the 3.5 version.

NB per 3.5 PHB, a mobile invisible creature is DC20 to Spot to within the 5' square it occupies, letting you shoot or melee it with the 50% miss chance for full concealment.
