I think that bards would know a great deal of lore in all matters, especially in legends, history, prophecies or strict scholarly facets of lore than knowing trivial matters, like who slept with the miller's daughter in Wickerton last night... the latter is hardly lore. Bard's aren't gossip magnets... that wouldn't make much of a bard. In fact, bard's might be next to integral if one chooses to potray a bard as I have depicted. They wouldn't make good leaders... they'd be messengers or someone called upon to help.

Matters of science (alchemy, natural science, law) are left to the recluse (the secluded wizard, dusty clerical tombs), but prophecy falls under the domain of art (philosophy, religion), if one were to divide lore into two sections. If one didn't make the divide, there is no reason to excluse a bard at all from any type of study of knowledge.

Prophecies are worked through myths, history and living life, not through science. Of course the two intertwine and overlap, but excluding the bard from such a historical process in a campaign is folly.

and Saturn's Halo, that's exactly the kind of feel/idea i was going for. altho i still think that there's room for the gossiping bard. after all, someone had to write "A Wizard's Staff Has Got A Knob On The End"
