Need Help with Ship Names, Types

I would have the elves name their ships after famous elves from the past (like we name ships after retired Admirals, ex-Presidents, etc.). So their ships should have elven names that have no meaning to the PCs. It's just a name. Malinear. Annech. Lifwen.

The hobgoblins would name their ships "butch"-sounding phrases, meant to bestow the qualities of that phrase upon the ship itself: Wave Cleaver, Swift Storm, etc....but in their own language, naturally.

Make the orcs utilitarian. Every ship is named the same thing: the orc word for "ship."

The orc/hobgoblin vessels would probably be based on the design of viking longboats, since they use them for the same sort of jobs...I don't see them developing sailing technology to the point where 16th-17th century style multi-deck, multi-mast ships would ever be developed.

From my homebrew campaigns

There is a seafaring race that played a large part in a recent war. Their ships aren't historic, but hey, it's a fantasy world. They don't travel in "battle groups" they travel in "pods". Massive ships of heavy construction their speed comes from the clerics of the sea goddess. They ALWAYS have the wind at their backs. The flag ship is armed with trebuchet. At its right is a dragon ship (think aircraft carrier), also in the mix are ballista frigates and catapult cruisers.

Some names I have used are the Stormdancer, Stingray and The Iron Hand of Kriegen. Hope that helps.

Oh, another homebrew race uses airships. Quick, lightly constructed, using Sorcerers for offense/ defense.

These are the exceptions and not the rule. Most seafaring races use more historic vessels.

I love the ideas for the ships and their names!

Here's the composite idea I have of the hobgoblin vessels from what everyone has said:

These ships would tend to be rather large, with massive crews. They would likely have oars in addition to their sail power, as a backup in case they are demasted, or in calm. They would mount quite afew guns in broadside, though they would mount their largest and most powerful cannon on their foredeck, above their massive ram.

And I love the idea of the orcs using longships. Officially, that idea has been stolen :)

As for the elven ships, here's a stat line I made up tonight for the xebec, the largest of the elven warships:

Wow....makes me think that maybe we should put out a "sequel" to CORSAIR: a "monster manual" of fantasy ships....

I would love it if something like that got off the ground. I'm just toying with things here, but I can post the other elven ships I've whipped out for people to critique if so desired.
