Need Monster Books

Hi gang,

As I am soon to be running the World's Largest Dungeon (perhaps followed by the World's Largest City - what's up with that?), I am planning on restocking a lot of the monsters in the WLD with non-SRD monsters and I'd like to know what monster books I don't have and don't even know exist.

I'm primary looking for books that are almost nothing but compilations of monsters, but not something like the Draconomicon or Liber Mortis.

Here's what I have:

MM1(R)
MM2
MM3
FF

CC(R)
CC2
CC3

Tome of Horrors
Denizens of Darkness (R)

Here are two that I plan to buy soon:
ToH2
Liber Bestarius

What am I missing?

There are more monster books out there than anyone could possibly count :)

A few good ones to keep in mind:
  • Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary--a 3.0 collection but very large (and pricy)
  • Green Ronin Book of Fiends--3.5 book, highly rated, very fiendish
  • Legacy of the Dragons--only 50 monsters, but each monster is very detailed, and comes with a sample encounter. AU-combatible but usable in 3rd edition.
  • Dragonlance Bestiary: Has very good illustrations, several previews are up at www.dragonlance.com

Denizens of Avendu: very creative if some wierd creatures

Monster of Endless Dark/Bounless Blue: Goodman games books dealing with creatures from under groundand in the water

Monster Geographica: Underground : 200 monsters designed for underground use, all from other ogl sources but the most bang for the buck (20$)

Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary: this is fast becoming my favorite monster book.

THe Freeport monster book is also good, though few creatures. The Warcraft monster book has some fun things in it. The Kalamar book has some great creatures though it does not offer many high level challenges.

You already stated you plan to buy ToH2 and Liber Bestiarus, so, what's left:

You do not have Monster Compendium: Monsters of Faerûn (WotC), Mindscapes: Beasts of the Id (Malhavoc), and Warcraft Manual of Monsters (S&SS).

As well as a bunch of others that have been already listed:
Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary (Atlas), Book of Fiends (Green Ronin), Legacy of the Dragons (Malhavoc), Dragonlance Bestiary (Sovereign Press), Denizens of Avadnu (The Inner Circle), Dangerous Denizens: Monsters of Tellene (KenzerCo), Monsters of the Endless Dark & Monsters of the Boundless Blue (Goodman Games, and by the way, avoid their "Primal Grove" monster book as there was an accident and it's a draft version that was sent to the press).

With all these sourcebooks, you'll probably not need the Monster Geographica: Underground (Expeditious Retreat Press) book.

I wouldn't say avoid it. I have it and the major errata is being placed on Goodman's site. Even without the errata only 1/20 of the book is useless (part of a class). Just be prepared for typos and more typos.

Anyways one monster book that always seems to be ignored in these threads is Complete Minions from Bastion. Plenty of underground beasties to unleash on your PCs.

Another is the Book of Template (DE) from Silverthorne. Why not "mutate" some of the base critters to give that extra "gift" to your players. ;)

Lots of Monsterbooks have already been mentioned.

Here are some that have not been mentioned yet.

- Bestiary of Loerem - Sovereign Stone Monsters
- Monsters Of Rokugan - Monsters for Oriental Adventures in Rokugan
- Lords Of the Night: Vampires - Liches - Zombies (3 very cool books about a type of critter and beefing them up considerably by adding lots of sub-types - read the reviews about them)

there are some Monster books from Fast Forward, but please avoid them. I have them and I am very happy, that I did not buy them at full price...
(i.e. Ecyclopedia of Demons & Devils vol 1, Vol 2 and so on)
