Need quick traveling encounter for tonight.

Well the title covers the basics...

I need some help coming up with a "random" encounter or 2 for my party for tonights game as they travel from Verbobonc to Rastor (Return to the Temple of ELemental Evil in Greyhawk).

The party consists of 3; 8 level characters (including a wizard, monk/ranger & Fighter/rogue/order of the bow) & 4; 7th level characters (cleric, bard, Troll)

2 of the characters are new to the group (cleric & Troll).

They will be traveling thru farm land, foot hills and mountains.

Just need ideas, I can do the stats. (unless you already have it all stated out )

A troll, with 4-5 levels of fighter and a dragonstein from Relics and Rituals. If you don't have R&R, in short the troll has fire resistance 12 and can belch flames. Why does he bother the party? Oh, a simple "bridge toll" or "road tax" which probably most adventurers will refuse to pay.

Pulled that on my party, and really confused the snot out of them.

A gang (2-5) of hill giants.

Not too bright. But, smart enough to begin by throwing rocks to soften the party up. They won't be able to do it too long though, the spellcasters will ruin their day. So, have them close distance and melee.

Alternatively, use a gang (2-5) of Stone Giants that are out looking around.
