Need Scarred Lands Assistance! (Don't know start point)

I have nothing but love for BOTH, since I favor both the High Gorgons, the Hags AND things like Blade Demons as well as Iron Devils. :) But I always feel it's a matter of choice in some ways, but hey, you enjoy what you like Xarlen, that's all I care about! :D

I love Hollowfaust. I'd love to run a couple campaigns there, especially when I get my paws on Wilderness and Wasteland. Definately will be a fun mix there! ;)

I like the hags! Hoha!

I looked through CC2, and I didn't see the iron Devil. Are those creatures in the Creature Collection 1, or 2?

Of course, I *really* liked Hollowfaust. Infact, I'm going to use that in my own campaign the next time I start a new campaign (either Hollowfaust, or a fantasy Mafia game).

R&R, I fully support. The prices for magical items is on S&SS's website.

Now, I'm wanting more info on the Carnival of Shadows.

CC1 with all the errata from the SS&S website does have a lot more interesting creatures in it I'll admit, but some of those CRs as printed are just wacky (check out the Dragonman at CR10(!) while the Moon Hag is only CR 9 (!!!)).

Don't get me wrong though - I own and use both these books and had a Woodwrack Dragon as the final protagonist in my recently-ended Scarred Lands campaign. That thing scared all living heck out my players - Whirlwind attack with 2 claws is just nasty!

I'll echo what everyone else is saying - Ghelspad setting book should be first followed by the SL DM's screen (you get a great little companion book with it too). R&R is a must really for all the spells and magic items but I would also suggest you might want Divine and Defeated as it has an in depth write up on all the gods and titans (including lesser gods). It's more a 'flavour text' oriented book though with few games mechanics but it is excellent for providing that much needed background on the Divine War.

Henry,

If you plan on starting your campaign at 1st level, I reccomend Warrens of the Ratmen. A lot of monsters in the Scarred Lands can be extremely lethal, espescially at lower levels.
The rat men allow you to start with small CR 1 challenges for your players, and are easily scaled up to more challenging foes for higher levels. And the book is a really good read.

Nightfall,

We have to wait for the Carnival of Shadows? Damn! I love all of the monsters for the Carnival, but am at a loss as to what to do with them. I have this mental image of a bunch of totally cool monsters and undead just kind of hanging out in the bayou, waiting for adventurers to show up, so they can terrorize/kill them. I know that's not right (and hardly what I want) but I'm stumped.

Can you, or anyone else tell me how you've used the Carnival of Shadows in your games? Please? Feel free to start a new thread for it (my apologies to Henry).

Thanks!

Not to mention that it does a pretty decent job talking about the Preist kings and the social strafications of the ratmen/slitheren. :)

Well at least until they get Termana settled down. :) Yeah it does suck but that's the way it goes. The S&SS crew has to finish ONE continent before they move onto the next one, at least up until they get R&R2 done anyway! ;)

Basically I used the idea from Hollowfaust, send them down the Blossoming sea to get some interesting and different monsters for the Bone collectors/traders. Also you could run them in Shelzar since they have a strong prescence there, but no Jack of Tears or any of his crewe leaders. Definately use heron priests along with other Krewe members as you see fit.

Couple of things here, thought I'd first post the images that are freebies from the S&SS site. These are maps of Pre-divine war Ghelspad. Hope this will help you all out.

Just so you all can get an idea of what it was like before the Divine War.

Secondly, thanks to Alaric for helping me fill out that gap.

Xarlen, hags rock and I really think I need to make a pr-class that's similar to ones in Dragon 296. Holy, you are so right about the Divine and the Defeated, it's a great book! :)

Hags, and Ratmen kick major booty! :) I'd like to work the Ratmen into a campaign, apart from the 75% FRCS campaign I'm running. They're very intelligent, and sneaky, and I could see using them to get the PCs on their side. ;)

I'm eagerly awaiting the Carnival of Shadows info.

Cold situations are good. The ice undead, the frozen slime, and Ice hag are all good choices for a low level mini-campaign.

And, I found R&R had good 'Flavor' to it. The spells had Rules and Flavor seperate. I *like* that.

If you are working on a short budget the gazeteer does provide a nice introduction and is pretty high on content.

My favorite supplement so far for Scarred Lands is "Burok Torn". You have the dark elves (very different from standard drow take on things), the dwarves and a expansionist empire all mixing it up. The supplement does focus on the Dwarven citadel itself.

later,
Ysgarran.

I'm devoted to Secrets and Societies as it brings huge amounts of backgrounds and ideas and Relics&Rituals 'cause it's still the best magic supplement published for the d20 system.
But to begin to play you'll only need the DM Screen and the Gazeteer (or the Hardcover if it's as good as it seems. I can't say because I'm STILL waiting for it), and maybe CCI because it covers some of the most important races in Ghelspad as Hags (REALLY nasty), Asaathi, Exemplars or the mighty Mithril Golem.

Henry, if you are looking for ideas, you are of course always free to go to my story hour and rip me off.

Just click on my sig! :)
