Need some help fleshing out (or changing) this NPC idea

What if the nephew joined the pirates not out of greed, but out of shame:

The attack happened during the nephew's assigned watch, but the nephew was asleep at his post. The cruel pirate convinced the captured nephew that the slaughter was partially his fault, and that if the dwarves ever found him they would kill him for abandoning his duty. But the pirate "kindly" offered the nephew an opportunity--If he joined the pirate band, then the pirates would protect him from the dwarves.

That's actually a pretty good idea. Maybe the dwarf is looking for a way to redeem himself as well - by going out in style.
