Need to destroy a lich's phylactery

I propose to put the lich's phylactery in a bag of holding. Then, stick sword through the bag, thus destroying it. According to the DMG, all items in the bag are lost forever. No mention of them being another plane...just lost forever. Now, the lich is a level 20 wizard. Still, I am trying to figure out why this won't work. Seems way too simple. Also, the phylactery is considered an artifact.

The Lich is lost forever. Someone else, somewhere else completely indeterminate, will have to deal with said Lich.

Their descendents have come back in time for revenge for the catastrophe you have unleashed upon them.

And eat your brains.

Alternatively, the lich casts Plane Shift or something.
The rules do say "Lost forever", so wherever they end up, a Plane Shift does not travel far enough.

However, it is within RAI to rule that only applies to unattended items, and attended items can make their way back the same way as any other piece of equipment on another plane that is being carried by a character. So 1d10 days after the Lich dies, they regenerate next to their Phylactory and the fun begins again.

Sounds like it works to me, though the fact that this is an artifact maybe an exception since they normally can avert destruction by any normal means.

If it was me, I'd let that work, but I wouldn't expect every DM to do so. The reason I'd let that work is an item merely lost in an infinite interplanar space would not be remotely lost forever by standard DM terms, and the 'lost forever' seems to imply that it is beyond the power of anything or any magic to get it back... which is really too powerful if you ask me, but I didn't create the item.

The big deal with the phylactery is finding it, not destroying it.
I would like to take this moment to thank our illustrious Doctor Watson. While the rest of us were occupied being discount, second-hand Sherlock Holmes, Loren Pechtel noted the utility of the mundane Adamantine hammer.

Edit: ...It's an artifact? Either your DM wants to challenge you (in which case, they should have solutions available), or they're messing with you. In the latter case, just keep doing dumb things until they give up. have a serious and frank discussion about keeping things legitimate.

Since each artifact has a specific method of destruction, I think you'll need to find this specific method to really deal with the phylactery. I certainly wouldn't rule that the sword-through-a-bag-of-holding technique would destroy the hand of Vecna.

EDIT: Assuming that it really is an artifact in the technical sense.
