Need weird, creepy animal ideas

Chaos is a state of change. So you want animals that are morphing, not only in shape, form and function, but also over age, 3-d space, and intelligence.

DM: There is a puddle of bubbling red goo in your path.
Player: I keep a wary eye upon it!
DM: As you watch the pool, it seems to change to a vivid green, coalesce, and take the form of a kitten. It looks at you with bright green eyes.
Player: I back away slowly!
DM: Do you meet its gaze?
Player: Yes.... No! (what is it?)
DM: roll the dreaded d20... Fort save (vs nothing in particular)
Player: 12
DM: You feel a chill crawl over your skin, you feel slightly nauseous, but you've felt far worse. As you back off, it starts to age, and gain a certain transparency, as if it were fading away... In the distance, you hear a dog bark.
Player: I draw my weapon and continue cautiously on my way.

I'd suggest after a long string of these creepy animals, a deformed/dying human tells them not to go around the next corner. The adventurers continue around the corner, of course, and what do they see? A simple white bunny, slowly moving around the street, which is, of course, the bunny from Holy Grail. Stat the bunny as a high level dervish with a fly speed.

This thread reminds me of some of Dave Hargrave's monsters from the Arduin Grimoire.

Thunder Bunnies -- huge herds of rabbits with enormously oversized feet; they would stampede like frightened cattle destroying everything in their path.

Might I suggest using a few sapient creatures? Possibly ones that could be helpful, but at the same time have problems of their own. Maybe an Awakened rat with clear skin and no fur? It'd be creepy, but at the same time, there's a lot to be said for the utility of a helpful NPC... particularly if it had some nice abilities that could help the PCs.

Also, why not have some occasional weird stuff happen to the humanoids in the area too.. 'wizard weather' would be a good thing to add.
