negative levels and death

Hi all,

A PC in my group received a negative level from a wight attack, but they managed to fight them off without any deaths in the party.

Unfortunately, a later attack with bugbears proved to be fatal to the character who had the negative level. This attack occurred less than 24 hours before the wight attack.

My question is: how do I handle the negative level bestowed on him? He won't be raised from the dead for at least another few days, thus the 24 hour fortitude save to prevent level loss will happen when he's dead. Do I give a dead character a fortitude save? This doesn't make sense to me. Do I give him a fortitude save after he is raised? Is the level loss from the wight automatic, and stacks with the level loss from the raise dead? Is the negative level ignored?

Thanks,

Let him roll the save when he's raised and note the results (if any).
After that, apply the level loss for being raised.

You know (and speaking from a player's perspective, here...), undead/dead things are immune to anything requiring a fort save...

;-)

So you're saying that the only way to effectively get rid of say 10 negative levels is to die?

(Suffering only one level loss from the raise)
