Networked Mac Games via TCP/IP?

I have a friend who just got a cable modem (his brother also has iChat AV, so we include him in our weekly online gatherings). We chatted using iChat AV for a it, which was great. I'd like to try Apple Remote Desktop soon, but our schedules never seem to mesh. While 10.3 has the ARD client built right in, he will not be upgrading soon due to budget restraints (and his brother won't budge from 10.2 until DigiDesign has support for the digi 001 and ProTools LE under 10.3).

Can anyone recommend an internet-based game which does not require subscribing to a game server? Ideally, I'd like to link 2-3 Macs running OS X together via TCP/IP. Another consideration would be the type of game; no "gun games", as none of use like shoot-em-ups.

But I thought you would have all 6 games for the Mac by now... ;)

Anyway, try out Warcraft. It worked ok at my last workplace, but I could never get the PCs and Macs to mesh into the same game via our LAN. So we just played on PCs as they were faster... sorry, just true. Not sure what the requirements are nor how it affects your situation, but it probably goes back to OS8, and you can chat all you want to one another if you are linked.

Warcraft is a good suggestion. Warcraft 2 is an awesome game and can probably be found in the bargain bin for practically nothing. Direct TCP/IP play is supported (but only in the Mac version :)). Warcraft 3 is also good, though if you're not on the same LAN you'll need to play through battle.net. Battle.net is free, though, so no big deal there.

I'm a Mac newbie, so the only Mac games I have are PC games that also came with a Mac version on the same disc (Warcraft 2/3), or allow you to download the Mac binaries (Quake 1/2/3). :)

Granted, Uru ("Myst Online") would have been perfect, but there will be no Mac version until the company sees a profit from the upcoming Windows version (Odd indeed, since Myst was created on a Mac and launched for the Mac market first).
