Never Trust a New DM

Ruleswise, I'm pretty sure the Doc is right: level-draining attacks are different from normal natural-weapon attacks. Otherwise, vampires would use a "slap you silly" maneuver, fluttering their hand across your face rapidly and draining two levels per flutter.

Given that - I guess I do not see what the issue is - sounds like he came up with a creature that probably initially scared the cr*p out of the group - but turned out to be a fairly easy encounter.

That and the fact that it really sounds like a cool monster - I would probably go with the Carrion Crawler with the Ghoul/Ghast template (since both are carrion consumers - the synergy is to good)

Oh, there's no "issue" - I just thought it was neat that he came up with such a cool monster. As a GM, I like scaring the cr%p out of the players - especially if I can do it without seriously damaging them.

After all, SteelDraco, you did recover from having that deer rip your throat out, right?

I don't think he was complaining about the monster, so much as he was sharing an annecdote.

Edit: Poster above beat me to it. Darn.

From the Wight Template (from Savage Species):

Energy Drain: Any living creature struck by a wight's natural attack must succeed at a Fortitude saving throw or gain two negative levels...

However, the Wight template can normally be only applied to humanoid creatures.

So it both works, and doesn't work. The 9 energy drains thing is totally above board, though.

Edit/Additional: noted where the Wight Template can be found.

Sorry - mis-understood the tone of your post .... my apologies

Aha, and mea culpa! I'd not seen this template before, and so was extrapolating from the vampire template's energy drain:

Energy Drain (Su): Living creatures hit by a vampire’s slam attack suffer 2 negative levels.

Thanks for the info! And rules-legit or no, it's still pretty dang cool, I'll admit!

Well, all you've got to do is take a page from Monte and Sean* and create the "Monstrous Wight" template. Presto! No problems.

*In Ghostwalk, there is a template for a Monstrous Vampire.

My first DM'ing session was right out of a WotC adventure "Into the Dragons Lair" The PC's were all about 10th lvl, and had been following a local guide (secretly evil 10th lvl ranger, who was leading them to a trap) I suddenly tell them they are hit with a fire ball (from a hidden mage, hasted)
My players obviously ask where from, to which I reply "at the end of this dead end"
They were quite curious how they ended up in a dead end, but combat was already on! Initiative rolled and the mage wins again, tosses 2 more fireballs and basicly wipes the party out. 30d6 damage for everyone! The Ranger wiped up any survivors, and somehow didnt get hit by any fireballs :D

Both are 'carrion consumers' with paralysis attacks, even. :D
