The MIC for 3.5 is without a doubt one of the best books for 3.5.

If they could make something like that for 4th edition, including (and this is absolutely vital) the extensive appendices listing items by slot and cost, then I'd be all for it. Of course, that runs into the problem of whether they could come up with enough material to fill a book. The 3.5 MIC had a lot of new material, but much of it was reprinted as well.

Of course, as I typed the above paragraph I got a shiver as I recalled that one of the tenets of 4th edition design is less reliance on magic items in the first place, so maybe a MIC is counter-intuitive. On the other hand, maybe it makes sense; the option is there if you want it, but there's no point overburdening the DMG with something you don't think people should use.

I can't believe how fast they're gonna start the splatbook stampede. 4.0 is going to be a much simpler and streamlined game to play. For about 2 months.
Then it's gonna get just as bogged down in clutter and extra rules as 3.5.
Then it's gonna be time for a new edition .
Wash, rinse, repeat.

I'm surprised no one's giggling over the 'Scepter Tower of Spellgard.'

I have a few ideas of how a magic item compendium for a game with 'less reliance on magic items' could be a good thing, but I don't have enough of a conception of what magic items will be like in 4e, so given what little information has been leaked, my assumption is that they're going to be as annoying and ubiquitous as in 3e.

So we have these 4thed releseases for 2008 (not including DMG screen, record sheets, dice, or tiles):

-H1 Keep on the Shadowfell

-Player’s Handbook

-Dungeon Master’s Guide

-Monster Manual

-H2 Thunderspire Labyrinth

-Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide

-H3 Pyramid of Shadows

-Magic Item Compendium I

-Scepter Tower of Spellgard

-Forgotten Realms Player's Guide

Is that it? These, plus the products releases earlier in the year (two eberon books plus the other preview book) more then meet WotCs "book a month" target.

Butwhat about the sword mage? Will we be seeing that in the FR Players Guide (and hence not in a "core" product), or do we have some others yet to be announced?

They also might release new material (classes etc) on the DDI…which would cause me nothing but revulsion.

In an earlier thread, there was talk of a game store in Israel mentioning three splat books: one for Martial, Arcane and Divine characters. Sword Mage would probably be there. As of this time, however, I haven't been able to find a way to confirm the splats, however. They do sound likely, given the past history of the game.
