I'm thinking about something like the fantasy equivalent of a flare or light stick.

That would be pretty cool. maybe u could get a gel u put on u that lights u up such as when u spill glow stick liquid on yourself.

Yes, quite good. And it was the first thing that popped into my head when you described your idea. And a great resource for inspiration in the campaign you're considering. The second Riddick movie was not so good, but the first was gold. The atmosphere of the movie is exactly what you're going for in you're campaign just set sci-fi rather than fantasy.

I'd recommend a blending of pitch black and Lovecraftian horror. The two combine very well in the context you want to build. If you've got the money Elder Evils would be a good resource for your purposes and given that it could be a while before 4e touches on those things best to pick it up before it gets harder to find.

heyy if i make this into a whole world would u guys want to play it? also im open to suggestions. im thinking of cities that are cast with continual light and they have lights strung up along roads that go out often because of the monsters in the darkness. just an idea. sound any good?

heavanshallburn thanks for the info. yeah i can grab a copy thats 5 mins from house. btw whats in it?
Basically it's the Horrors from Beyond of Lovecraft in a D&D context. Well not entirely there are some inevitables and a few other things, it also concentrates on High Level foes. But it's themed around the issue of horrible Far Realm/Chaos/Obrylith influences that cause devastation. Lots of great options for things to make an eternal darkness/Old Ones triumphant style campaign. Here's a link to the art gallery http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4art/20071218a

I don't know if this would make a good long-term campaign, but it would definitely make an excellent short-term campaign. You could also drop this into a long-running campaign as an adventure or a series of adventures.

IMHO, Pitch Black was one of the better sci-fi movies of the past 10 years.

As for the campaign, I did something like this a few years ago for a D&D campaign designed to introduce some people to 3Ed. The world wasn't plunged into darkness- that was what my homebrewed critters- The Dark (a kind of demon)- were aiming to do. I used some Lovecraftian & Pitch Black elements, as well as a dose of Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Leaves )

By and large the campaign was a success. It lasted about 2 years and only broke up because RW problems intruded.

Caveat- I was a bit burned out on D&D when I was asked to run this campaign by friends. Because of this, I made one crucial error in my creature design.

The Dark had the ability to make creatures succumb to a minor and very focused form of mind control- they could force you to extinguish light sources or make you reconsider using attacks that shed light (including spells like lightning bolt or fireball, flaming weapons, etc.). I resolved this by using a Will save mechanic. They attacked by doing a little HP damage with a chance of ability damage on a crit.

My error was that I usually had them damage Str, but high level PCs would routinely make their Will saves and use terribly damaging light-shedding attacks. I should have had The Dark drain Wis instead. The result was that the climactic battle was a bit less epic than it should have been.
