New Campaign (yay!): Warlock or Knight?

Well, one of my players is starting up a mini-campaign for the new Ravenloft module. Me and five other folks. I'm quite excited - it's been a very long time since I've been able to play and not DM.

We're starting at fifth level.

My first choice is to play a warlock. Fight evil fire with fire and all that.
But assuming the party leans toward goodity goodness, I'll probably play a knight. I've got entertaining character concepts worked out for both of them.

Has anyone here played either of these classes and enjoyed them before? If so, any tips or tricks on building them, feat progressions to shoot for, or interesting quirks about the class abilities?

I'd love to hear some feedback!

I haven't read the module. But by theme I'd say go for knight first, than, about halfway through, your character propably dies of uncurable heroism, aka won't-run-away syndrome, and you get to try your hands at warlock as well. ;)

For Ravenloft, I would think that a Knight/Paladin combo would be ideal. If your party heads toward the neutral or evil side, then consider some sort of Necromancer type - there is bound to be some evil/undead based goodies that would work in your favor for Ravenloft.

For myself, I have been itching to play a Wizard/Archivist (having a Necromancer flair) with a Dr. Frankenstein personality - animating dead for science, but having issues with his morality.

We had a Aasimar Warlock in out brief Eberron game. She had some complicated backstory but basically had the Aasimar aspect from her bloodline and the warlock powers from where she was born. That kind of juxtaposition was interesting. Even if you dont want to go the Aasimar route you could say your PC was of a noble line but that your powers manifested becuase of a curse or becuase of where you were born/concieved. You are struggling with your darkside to uphold the ideals of your family and make your parents proud.Sounds like it would be a perfect fit in a Ravenloft campaign.

EDIT: And allow you to play a fight-evil-fire-with-evil-fire PC that fit into a "goodie-goodie" party.

Knights are sexy, and are excellent as a pure class all the way to 20th level. Can't say that for many classes, really.

However, multiclassing with Paladin would be pretty sweet. Or a Fighter, even (see PHBII for nifty-butt fighter feats :D). Hope that helps you :)

cheers,

Well...

A Knight is a "in-your-face" melee type. High HP, Great AC, lots of defensive abilities. With the right feats, they can be a shield or a melee-damage dealer (though not a versatile as a fighter).

A Warlock is just the opposite. A warlock is a ranged/damage specialist with lots of special abilities to add to offensive or defense. You need not be evil either, CG is a viable alignment and fey a viable "heritage".

They are polar opposites: melee/meatshield and ranged/nuker. Both are viable, so you may need to discuss this with your group.

I'm currently playing a knight in Alcar's game, and it's great fun! I really enjoy the rp opportunities, the way the class abilities and code of conduct interact, and the class abilities themselves.

I haven't played a warlock, but it looks like it would get boring fast.

Warlocks rock. My current party (I'm the DM) has 2 of them out of 4 PCs. If you have/are using complete mage some feats (the fey feats) work really well with warlock. And you can have lots and lots of cool options depending on how you run it....
