New Character Background

Crothian

First Post
In the lower tundra lives a group of semi nomadic humans called the Dotmares. They live and travel in large extended families. They trade with one another and many traveling caravans. They each have a small thorp that they live in. They hunt and travel in a wide area around their home in the warmer months. In the bleak winter travel is only done if the need is great.

Faroth grew up in the thorp of Dover. His father, Derik, is a hunter and leader of the local hunters and guides. His father fell in love with an elven healer (Sulena Kuile), and their union brought forth Faroth. Faroth was raised to be a hunter and a healer.

His tribe is on the border of lands savagely ruled by giant, trolls, and ogres. The men and women hunt for food and act as defenders. Mostly they locate the giants and mislead from the thorps. Combat with the creatures only ends in much death of the human tribesmen. When Faroth was twelve Derik lead a raiding party consisting of many heroes from the thorps on the giants stronghold. Their purpose was to raid the giants and make it seem like another group of ogres had done it. The group never returned.

From that point forward Faroth learned what he could to fight the giants. He has only had one encounter with them, and that left two of the hunters in his group dead and the other five running for their lives. After that encounter Faroth knew he needed to learn more of the world and bring back some of it’s secrets to his people so they could finally take out the giant threat once and for all. Faroth said goodbye to his mother and got a ride with a caravan. He traded his knowledge as a hunter and guide for transportation and food.

That's what I have so far for my new character. The worlkd is homebrew and since I'm new to the group I'm not that familiar with it, yet. So, tommorrow I will see how much, if any gets changed by the DM. I can post the character if people would like to see him. He's just a first level ranger, nothing to exciting stat wise yet. I'm trying to flesh out the background and include a little mystery for the DM to possibly use (disappearing Dad and the hunting group) while also giving him a reason to travel and adventure (learn fighting skills to destroy giants). Thoughts??

Mum and Dad

An interesting story with good reasons to get out on adventures.

But what happened to his mother? How did she take the death of her husband? Did she encourage Faroth to leave home and hunt giants? Or did she try to convince him that he should remain at home to protect the home? Did she try to avenge him herself?

Also, whas his father a respected member of the community? Whas a good hunter? Does Faroth try to live up to his father?

Well, thats my two piece of copper.

Keep up the good work!

Hmm.. I can dig it:)

Sounds like someone I know..

I also have to draft the origin/background of a new character so here's mine...

Symianus, son of lowborn farmers, was removed shortly after his third birthday by a wandering mystic who sensed in him the potential to become a great wielder of the arcane arts. The wanderer paid a tidy sum to Symianus's parents in exchange for custody of the boy. Neither Sym nor his estranged parents have attempted to re-establish the familial bond.

Traveling with the Mystic to the large southern metropolis of Anon, Symianus was soon sequestered among the lofty towers of the Tempus Arcanum. A society of wizards who sought the perfection of arcane knowledge above all things.

Sym grew to understand the advanced concepts of weaving the strings of magic at an astonishing rate. His rapid ascent in ranking among his peers caused great conflicts among the senior instructors in the order. His natural knack for summoning magics and general disinterest in the more destructive arts of evocation was recognized and encouraged.

In little less than 12 years Sym had reached a point in his understandings of the fine mechanics of arcane conjuration that he was promoted to journeyman status within the order. As a result of the atypical promotion, the elder members of the order encouraged Sym to leave the Tempus Arcanum, and travel into the outer world. Ending the traditional training and instruction in the arts seven years before any who had before.

Sym's natural curiosity, and innate perceptions have helped to curb his rampant exhilaration and lack of restraint in dealing with the new world he now travels. Sym is naturally attracted to unique experiences, both for the search for understanding, as well as to gain insight into the grander designs of the multi-verse.

The one goal Sym has held since an early age was truly the reason for his 'encouraged travels'. When he had begun to understand the fundamental structures of the divinities and was introduced to the concept of planar existence, Symianus told his metaphysics instructor that he would one day commune with the celestial hosts, and would seek the answer to a very simple question. "Why do Gods exist?" Of course his instructors merely dismissed the statement as a childish folly, but as Sym developed, and learned they realized it had not been an idle question, and Sym fully intended to have his chance to ask. The sulking wizards had no love of the divine font, and so they had no interest in upsetting the powers with esoteric questions. This debate raged for six months, and in the end Sym was 'encouraged' to travel.

He has since journeyed far tot he north of his adopted order, joined with a cleric, a ranger and a person of some questionable employment. Most of whom he met in a bar by asking his usual innane questions.

By the way, Sym is in the same game as Crothians' ranger.. we shall see how things progress:)
