GURPS Conan came out in 1989.
I didn't realize there was a quickstart. I'll have to check it out. After looking at the QSR, I might back the PDF. It is a very streamlined and easy system to get into. Four abilities, armor reduces damage, abstract combat zones, no long skill list. The character sheets at the end give me a good vibe. Skills akin to special abilities (feats).
You missed the TSR color-table5 maybe? AD&D. GURPS (I think). D20. Modiphius. This one.
There might be more.
THe QS is why I'm going to pass. Too light for my tastes. After looking at the QSR, I might back the PDF. It is a very streamlined and easy system to get into. Four abilities, armor reduces damage, abstract combat zones, no long skill list. The character sheets at the end gave me a good vibe. Skills akin to special abilities (feats).
Astonishing Swordsman & Sorcerers of Hyperborea could make the list. From the reviews it strikes the perfect balance between BX and AD&D1.You missed the TSR color-table
So, in order:
This new one makes at least 6 with license. (Which really is about the trademarks more than the copyrights, especially as the earliest works are now in public domain in a number of countries.)
- TSR AD&D (modules, no formal setting book) and Red Sonja (at least one module)
- TSR Color Table Conan THe Roleplaying Game (Conan Role-Playing Game )
- SJG's GURPS Conan
- Mongoose D20 Conan: The Roleplaying Game (2 editions, very minor changes betwixt)
- Modiphius.2d20 Conan: Adventures in an Age Undreamed Of
A couple of OSR/OSR-Adjacent games have heavy and obvious conan influence
There are probably more OSR games building off the conan thematic materials that I just haven't seen or haven't remembered.
- Barbarians of Lemuria
- ZeFRS (which is a direct pseudoclone of the Color Table version vaguebooking the setting)
There's also a hack of AW for conan. (There seems to be one for almost any setting.)
And Sonja & Conan vs the Ninjas seems to be a semi-satirical take on the genre.
Not to mention the 70's FGU minis game, Royal Armies of the Hybroian Age.
This Kickstarter ad came across my feed. It is the first I have heard about a new Conan RPG. Anyone know anything?
There is a progression of the odds. It starts with a d10 but goes down to a d8 and then a d6, which increases the odds of happening. Considering the Effects of a Flex Roll, I feel the odds are ok. With a party of 4 to 5 players rolling for attacks 3-5 rounds per combat, it's bound to happen often enough.Flex dice looks too weak. If you are gonna have a cool selling point, make it work more than 10% of the time.
The estate still controls the names and the settings IP. I am aware of a KS who was sent a C&D because they produced named Conan minis. When people say 'official conan RPG' what is that in reference to exactly (I was under the impression that the Howard stories were all in the public domain---is that not the case?)
