New Core Class Help

First Post
I am looking at creating a new core class, and was looking for some help on the topic. The only part of the class I have thought of is the general concept. Basically, I want an arcane druid. I want it to get brew potion at level one (yes I know that it normally requires third level, but I want it to get this instead of scribe scroll.). At about level five, I want it to get Magical Artisan: Brew Potion. I do not want it to get wild shape, and I want it to have a unique combination of wizard and druid spells. I am kicking around the idea of it having a set, smaller spell list with all spells known like the Warmage. Other than that, I am not sure about what it should get. Any advice would be nice.

Take a peek at the Spirit Shaman from Complete Divine. It's one of my favorite "variant core" classes. Take away some Spirit powers, throw in some Sor/Wiz spells to its spell list, and add in some bonus Feats (like Brew Potion & Magical Artisan), and you may have what you want.

So more of a hedge wizard than a druid? In the complete arcane they talk about new flavor for things like scrolls and potions. How about a Brew Reagent at first level. Mechanic wise it works like a scroll meaning that not everyone can use the reagents just those with use magic device or the right spell list. Flavor wise it is a potion that only works when applied by a knowledgable user. At 3rd level he can then make potions that work for anyone.

I like the brew regent idea. I am looking for suggestions on other abilities the class should have though. I do not want wild shape, like I said, and I am thinking of instead of a familiar an animal companion, but I don't know.

Hmm. I'd start with the adept NPC class (generally underpowered) and add the abilities you're looking for (making it comparable to the existing base classes), rather than trying to modify any of the existing base classes.
