This is overstating the case and taking Monte Cook very much out of context. Unfortunately, this has also been repeated so often that it's become "internet truth".

You're right. He actually said that they had gone too far in that direction, not merely that it was a direction they were going in.

OTOH, he was apparently upset about 3.5 when he wrote it.
