New Dm + New Player = HELP!!

Yeah, I did this too. Since i'm a new DM as well, and most of the players are new, I allowed them to adjust/fix their characters once before our next game.

After playing only once, they had a much better idea of what worked, what didn't work, and how their powers work.

Thing is, I told them they could only do this once since we can't be changing our characters around every game.

Even after this stage though, D&D does allow you to change a power/feat every level. So if someone has chosen an attack using the wrong stat, they can just fix it up later.

As DM, it's your job to make sure everyone has fun. But it's not your job every PC is optimized to the max. Your player even said he wants to figure it out himself - let him!

As a DM, you have so many things to worry about -
How do I create an interesting plot?
How do I make sure the PCs get hooked up in it?
How do I wing it if the inevitable happens and the players run of into a completely unexpected direction?
What challenges should I present? Monsters? Talky NPCs? Fiendish traps?
How do I make the fights interesting?

All of these questions are answered on your side of the screen.

The player only has his character sheet. That's all he controls in the game. Leave him that space. You as DM have the rest of the world.
