New Feat-Rondori

Have a feat idea that I would like some suggestions on. It's based on Rondori, a martail arts training exercise pitting the trainee against multiple opponents. The idea is to manipulte the situation so that your opponents are tripping over each other:

Rondori
Req: Expertise, Combat Reflexes

Effect: Opponents are concidered to have a facing one size larger when determing who surronds a character.

Example: Jethro the monk is surronded by 8 medium creatures (5x5 facing). With this feat, Jethro can only be effectively surrounded by 4 medium creatures (their facing is now 10x10).

This feat does not change an opponent's actual facing or reach.

Sounds interesting. Wouldn't it be easier, however, to just say only half the normal number of opponents can surround the possessor? That should cover the same idea, this wording just seems a little clunky to me, but maybe I am just half asleep.

A very interesting idea, but I have no idea how it would work in practice.

Does this mean that they're considered larger if only flanking?

What if an ally is next to you?

I'm a lil puzzled by how this would affect movement on the battlemap. Also, what if your ally wants to flank with you? Call S your foe's effective size, Y you, and A your ally...

YSSA
XSSX
XXXX

Are you flanking? Is your ally even threatening your enemy? Can you both threaten at once (since the 'actual size' of the enemy is only one square)?

Another interesting issue: What if you move in on enemies like so: (Y = you, each E is a separate enemy)

XXXXEE
YXXXXE
XXXXXE
XXXXXE
XXXXXE

Say you move in to here:

XXXXEE
XXXXYE
XXXXXE
XXXXXE
XXXXXE

Are your enemies suddenly squeezing?

Etcetera.

I haven't read the 3.5 rules yet, so I'm not sure how facing works now. If halving the amount that can surround you works, then cool deal!!

The feat only effects an opponents size when deteremining which of them can immediately surround you. Otherwise, treat them normally.

Yes, there would be squeezing. the idea is that your maneuvering opponents in front of or into each other, forcing them to move out of the way (you could 'paint yourself into a corner' so be careful). Possibly have the opponents be forced to move out of the way on a ref check (dc tba) or be forced out of the way, gaining only a partial action on their next round.

Flanking allies would also be effected, since they have to avoid fumbling opponents as well.

You could only effect those within your threat range (could make fighting with a polearm or spiked chain interesting).

From my own experience, the technique can be used as an offensive or defensive ability. It also means getting close to opponents. as a balance, possibly give those opponents a bonus to attempt grapples (that may be reduced with advanced feats)?
