New Interview (?) - Vin Diesel and D&D

Inez Hull

First Post
Came across an interview with Vin Diesel for The Chronicles of Riddick in The Drum Media which is a Sydney street press - mainly music but some film. I don't know if it is a transcript of another interview but it seems to be a one-off and as such will be unread by about 99.99% of roleplayers out there. Thought people might me interested to read his comments on D&D.

This is a man who was brought up on a world of fantasy, and, like a grown-up child, sparkles at the very mention of one of his primary influences: Dungeons and Dragons. Or, perhaps, one questions, it was just a rumour that Dungeons has spoken to the child within for some two decades. He rolls back on his chair and merely smiles. "I never play D&D," he begins with mock seriousness. "For some reason, they thought that I played D&D for 20 years. They thought that I spent years playing Barbarians, Witch Hunters and the Arcanum. They thought I still played D&D back in the 70's when it's just the basic D&D set. They thought I continued to play D&D when it became Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. They thought I played D&D when there were only three books - the player's handbook, and the DM's guide. They thought that I played D&D as it continued onto the Unearthed Arcanum, Oriental Adventures, Sea Adventures, and Wilderness Adventures. They thought I played D&D at the time when Deities and Demigods was the brand new book. They thought I played D&D when I used to get up to a place called The Complete Strategist in New York." We get the point as he smilingly mouths: I'm into D&D a lot, "It was a training ground for a lot of my adventures."

Please note that spelling mistakes are from the article, attribute any mistakes to Vin Diesel or the interviewer as you please. ;)

Vin Disel makes great movies. Anyone see chronicles of riddick? As far as I'm concerned it was better than all the other action movies thus far this summer, barring no one.
It's awesome that a cool celebrity actually plays D&D, I think it helps us out.

I think it's cool also that a well known and popular actor plays the game and is adamant about it.

Just a thought, but it would be an even bigger help if they actually signed him to do the new D&D movie, but that won't happen. Even if he was in it for a bit part.

Yeah, Vin in the new D&D movie seems like a no-brainer but I think Vin can smell crap when it comes his way. I wouldn't be surprised if they optioned him and he turned it down. I think he would like to do it if it were in the right hands.

Pitch Black and The Chronicles Of Riddick are both great as far as I'm concerned. I found them both to be very atmospheric which many sci-fi movies lack. The use of special effects, especially in the second one, was extensive but without overdoing it. The only thing I found corny was the mullet they put on Karl Urban :P This isn't supposed to be Mad Max in Beyond Thunderdome!

I'm just surprised that they made such an expensive sequel to a relatively unknown sci-fi film, the connections to the first one were integral to the plotline too.

I wouldn't mind seeing a third one. Anyone who has seen the second one can tell you that they could pretty much go any direction with the next one.
