New Monk Rules

The wife and I had been working on what to do with a possible monk.

We had decided (based on a comment from someone here on a thread a while back) to just make a weapon of "Martial Arts" with 1d8 damage, and a +3 proficiency bonus, and making it superior. A monk is a fighter or ranger who trades his weapon proficiencies with Martial arts, staff and other such monk weapons.
We also figured to trade Armor Prof for "double the Int or Dex for AC when wearing no armor or cloth armor".

Glad to see my thoughts run like official stuff.

With a ranger or Fighter build and those rules, you can have a kick butt unarmed fighter. :)

Monks in this case require magical gloves to increase the enhancement bonus to attack and damage, to keep up with the way the system scales. Also, giving monks +3 proficiency bonus and +3 AC bonus, while approximately balanced, feels too arbitrary. A tiered system perhaps?

A change I would suggest is that monk (ranger) powers be keyed off Dex instead of Str.

More later...

Yeah.

Given the classic visuals, I always liked the visuals of magic belt giving the attack and damage bonuses... a Brown Belt (or sash) giving a +4 and a Black being a +6. :)

or you could choose diffrent weapons for diffrent styles

D10 dam +2 prof high crit

D8 dam +3 prof versitle

D8 dam +3 prof off hand
and use rogue ranger and fighter mixed with those to show vastly diffrent styles

I recommend you change your colour from silver (or don't set a colour for your text) because it is illegible on non-default schemes for ENworld (such as stealth or PHB)

Thanks

It does make it pretty clear that when we eventually get the monk, it will be a striker.

Dunno, making a striker class seems kinda easy. If they already have a few strikers in mind (and I'm thinking the barbarian might be one of them, because a defender barbarian seems kind of... odd), making them a defender somehow makes just as much sense.

Everything else about the monk will be easy since most of their 3E features were designed to offset the heavy reliance on equipment other classes had. Now that equipment is secondary to class powers, the monk will easily stand with others and it's nothing but a class feature to increase damage by tier in unarmed combat (which will seem to suck compared to 3E).
