Maybe drop the war part and call them simply "Forged" or "Forged men"? Double meaning, in that they're made in a forge; and they're not "real" people, they're in some sense forgeries of real people.

Thats a cool site, and can do a lot of the heavy lifting for the kind of thing I'm suggesting, but it leans heavily towards standard sci-fi: you'd have to steampunk it up a bit.
While I can't argue with the quality statement, I'd say we couldn't even touch the visible part of the contrails from the afterburners on weem's rocket-powered donkeyhorse with a ten foot pole.
(Especially since those poles are not available anymore...)
