Personally I like "fighter."

Again, it's impossible to know without seeing the class abilities, but it seems to me he's basically the party leader. I know, it's a silly sacred cow thing, but I don't want a new core class. Just kill him and give his abilities (feats, talents) to the cleric or fighter, or both.

Cool. Before I even read down through the posts, my thought was "Captain" too.

But I didn't want to suggest a particular military rank (Can you be a General Captain?), so I said "Warlord is fine." Commander is good too.

Part of the problem though is that we don't know all of his class abilities, so we can't really pin it down yet. Let's just hope WotC gets it right ...
Another vote for "Captain" (LotR has a class by that name).

Failing that, going simply by "Leader" (remember the Legendary Leader PrC?) would be fine.

I severely diskile the name "Warlord".

Marshal is fine, if a bit pretentious. "Centurion" would get my vote -- it's historically a warrior leader, and doesn't have the naval or current military rank baggage that "Captain" has.

Herald should be a warrior bard, only a militant one rather than a barbarian skald.

Damn, look at all the people who think warlord is "fine".

What a terrible name. First off, warlord has pretty heavy negative connotations. It's a bully, a thug who rules by force. Second, a warlord leads an army, not a small group of skirmishers. Third, it's a grandiose title, inappropriate for low-level characters.

And fourth, "marshal" did the job pretty well. Nice and neutral, a marshal's station can be humble or high.

It's really distressing that out of an entire R&D, these arguements haven't been circulated and accepted. I'll be the first to say they're pretty obvious.
