New Official D&D FAQ

Dire Bare

I think this is a scoop, at least I didn't notice it until tonight when I was checking out the April Previews.

WotC has a new D&D FAQ up on their website, and I think it clarifies some info on the D&D Insider that was previously, well, unclarified.

If I'm really the first to light upon this scoop, it'll be my second scoop on the boards ever! I'm so excited! :p

My players will probably enjoy being able to use the character builder without having to subscribe. As the DM, I'm planning on subscribing, although I have no plans to use the actual virtual gaming table at the moment. I just want full access to all the tools and databases.

I am looking forward to possibilities of the virtual game table. Our core group of close friends and players have been scattered around the country in the last few years and this gives us a great opportunity to do a once or twice a month campaign. We've already discussed the finances in that it is unfair for the DM to have to pay $10-15 a month and the players nothing. For us, we'll end up having everyone chip in on the yearly cost.

I just have to hope that DDI ends up being as good as it is claimed to be. So far, I haven't seen much proof of that yet. The previews to date have been lackluster at best, and nothing in the digital realm that has been offered in the past associated with D&D has been all that great, with the exception of Neverwinter. Hopefully WotC will have learned some lessons. Only time will tell on this one.

Thanks a ton for this link. Very interesting info, if still incomplete and a bit frustrating. :/ Hmm. So, we will have to pay for extra D&D virtual minis. What is the pricing plan? Will they be sold individually? Random packs? "theme" packs? Something else? Will we be able to replicate them as much as needed (we'd better!!) in our games? All these questions and more...

Still very happy to hear that some features will be free to everyone!!

there is this too:

How much will the digital magazines cost?
Dragon and Dungeon Magazines are included as part of your subscription. Nonsubscribers will also be able to purchase individual PDF issues of the magazines (pricing TBD).

They need to just go ahead and make the GameTable a standalone software. The excitement and fan support of GameTable would go off the chart, I'm wagering. The cost of their table is going to keep crippling it. But at least it garners a LOT of attention to VTT software. Khaalis you don't have to wait for D&D GameTable to enjoy a virtual tabletop. Just type that into a search window.

I recommend Fantasy Grounds II and Battlegrounds RPG as the frontrunners. And you pay for them once.

I know that Scott Rouse has said that the virtual minis will NOT be randomized, but I don't recall any other details.

Oooo, I like the sounds of this:

Will 3rd party companies be able to use the D&D Insider tools? Specifically, could a company recreate one of their adventures or produce Digital Minis for a 4th Edition product?
Anyone, individuals and companies, will be able to use our tools to create free maps and adventure content usable on the D&D Game Table. Regarding the production of D&D Insider Digital Objects (3D tiles or Digital Miniatures), we will consider establishing new types of partnerships with other companies to expand the scope of these digital tools in a structured way.

Sweet. Looks like we might just have a nice little niche for some enterprising 3rd party guys.
