New President at WoTC?

Krieg

First Post
According to Gaming Report, Greenwood (Loren not Ed ;) ) is the new man in charge replacing Huebner...

Wizards of the Coast Gets New CEO and President

Greenwood was with Wizards before the buy-out while Huebner is a Hasbro man all the way (and was put in place because Wizards didn't have their hosue in order at the top, but that is another story). Hopefully the change will be good with a little less bean counting & a little more put back into the product. We'll see. :)

Anyone have more info on this?

If WotC can maintain the quality level of their last few products (Complete Warrior, Draconomicon, Unearthed Arcana) then I will be happy.

I don't disagree with that, although the ho-hum Modern Weapons Locker & Player's Guide to Faerun are recent as well.

I definitely agree that the quality of products is generally higher than a couple of years ago, I just really wish Wizard's would take a few more risks. Merely repackaging everything for 3.5 (with a few tidbits left over from 2e) is getting a bit stale.

Hail to the chief,
They have chosen for the Wot-Cee,
Hail to the chief,
We salute him, one and all!

Hail to the chief,
As we pledge consumerism,
In proud fullfillment of a great and noble call!

Yours is the aim to make that grand company grander,
This you will do, That's their strong, firm belief.
Hail to the one they selected as commander,
Hail to the President! Hail to the Chief!

lol, modified CMG pledge there Mark? :p

On a slightly more serious note, I wonder how much this could herald any changes. Does being president mean anything when its still president of a subsidiary? The answer is probably yes, since Hasbro seems wise enough to leave well enough alone so far.

The question then becomes, will Greenwood change anything? Perhaps we'll see adventures published by WotC again? Or maybe supplements that have more fluff than crunch? Honestly, I like the material WotC is producing now, but they seem to be in "survival mode" in that they aren't producing anything that hasn't had everything that could possibly reduce sales culled from it. While it may be a wise move, business-wise, I think it wouldn't be so bad if you add in more flavor text, even if that does lower the percent chance of breaking even from 67% to 66% (or whatnot).

Certainly I can agree WotC is doing a large number of repackated products.

However, I think the Eberron setting could count as something of a risky venture. It's certainly something different from their previous fare.

The Race sourcerbook line might offer some more original stuff (or might not).

True, but it is also in many ways targeted for the "lowest common denominator" in that it appears to be trying to be everything for everybody. While it may be a risk, it is a very low level one (not that it's a bad thing).

I've been pretty critical of WoTC in the past and have had my share of arguments with various Wizard's employees online over the years (who invariably get laid off shortly after said disagreements :p ).

That being said I have no problems admitting that WoTC is putting out some very good products right now. They may be a bit vanilla but the quality is excellent at just about every level & the actual mechanics in general are better implemented than a lot of their products from 2-3 years ago.
