New Question - Dawn spell

The PCs were hit by...

Symbol of Sleep
Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting]
Level: Clr 5, Sor/Wiz 5
Saving Throw: Will negates
This spell functions like symbol of death, except that all creatures of 10 HD or less within 60 feet of the symbol of sleep instead fall into a catatonic slumber for 3d6x10 minutes. Unlike with the sleep spell, sleeping creatures cannot be awakened by nonmagical means before this time expires.Unlike symbol of death, symbol of sleep has no hit point limit; once triggered, a symbol of sleep simply remains active for 10 minutes per caster level.

... and the PCs wanted to use a Dawn spell to counteract it.

That's a pretty lame spell for be used against a 5th level magic. But it is magical.

Thoughts?

Dawn who?

Anyway, assuming dawn is a spell that magically wakes people up, it seems reasonable to me. I see nothing wrong with it. What's the problem, exactly?

Just a question in case it comes up again. The party druid was capable of using the spell but opted to do something else.

We spend A LOT of time in my game just explaining (and re-explaining) basic concepts like attack bonus and damge modifiers (no lie). Everything I can nail down ahead of game time is time I don't have to spend frittering around when the dice are out.

Thanks for your answers on both of the questions.

I think your real issue is this, right? A low-level spell/effect that counteracts a higher level spell/effect? The game is rife with such examples, though, and there's really nothing wrong with it. If your party druid happens to have the counter prepared, then good for them. :)

It was a sprung-up idea and no one had the spell description available during gameplay. The druid had it on a wand but only had an idea of what the spell did and couldn't show me an example. In the end, it didn't matter because the wand was melded into his wildshaped form, so he couldn't get to it.

No one died, so they're in good shape.

Has the Dawn spell been published in a 3.5e product? I first saw it in one of the 3.0e splatbooks. My druid used to use it quite a bit (always getting attacked at night while resting).
