New Quickling

Don't like.

I agree with Irda Ranger. The appeal of the quickling was always its lithe, fey appearance. The one in this pic just looks like a sort of dire goblin.

Woah!

That thing looks like that nasty little bugger from an episode of Tales from the Dark Side.
It lived in the closet and ate guests.

I was like 13 when I saw that episode and I still remember how creeped out I was.

Good job.
I'll never look at quicklings the same.

I'm with Sadrik. My first thought was "now it looks like a goblin on crack". I understand the appeal, but there are only so many things that you can make bug-eyed and vicious before it gets cliched. I don't think this was one that needed a total re-draw.

That aside, it's a nice piece of artwork up there.

Nice composition. I'd tone down the deltoids (shoulder muscles) a bit, bring them more in line with the thighs. The pectorals could use some better definition. But I like it.

In the original image, the shoulder muscles are disproportionately large. I was trying to stick with that design. Also, the chest is very wasted. The original pic of the Quickling was posted on another forum so I'm going to link to that.

So that's the new quickling?

I don't like the design of the creature as a quickling, but I'm sure it would make an interesting kind of goblinoid.

It just doesn't look quick to me. It actually looks rather awkward and imbalanced.

I agree, I don't think this thing can walk well but it looks like it can jump... BTW I liked your picture better than the one in the book.

Whoa. I don't know what that thing is, but it sure ain't no Quickling.

I mean, besides the fact that it looks like a Underdark-exclusive cannibalistic goblinoid, it doesn't look quick. Quick things, like horses, greyhounds and cheetas, have skinny legs. It's also terribly top-heavy for something that's supposed to run fast.

So far the 4E art has been really hit and miss with me. I like the lack of buckle-fetish gear, and the weapons and armor are much improved, but some the "organic" stuff has really been left wanting with me. The Tiefling's tail and horns and now this really jump out at me as "We thought it looked cool; we gave little/no thought as to whether this makes any sense at all."

I realize the "makes sense" is a criticism that must be used sparingly, but c'mon! Do you think something whose feet are half its body-weight (and lacks hips to speak of) are going to run fast?

Honestly, I'd prefer if it had been designed as a vague homage to Sonic the Hedgehog rather than a wingless, hairless bat with stumpy ostrich legs.

And the leafy underoos are just... over the top.

Really, if they had, say, an earless (or pointed, laid-back-eared), mouthless (or tiny-mouthed) humanoid with a narrow body, extremely smooth, glassy skin, maybe eyes like mercury, and a row of spines or a spined fin running down its spine and back of its head... maybe they lay down at will... same with the limbs, perhaps... give it long, narrow, nasty claws maybe even holes in its hands to reduce drag from palms... or just really narrow palms... maybe give them a weird nostril set up so they can breathe while they run...

It can run and slash (who the heck uses a bite attack at super speeds?), looking fae, and look awesome, with a nice self-defense for when someone tries to grapple them to keep them from using their speed.

And look like Sonic the Hedgehog. :P
