New spell idea.

I'm currently playing a rogue/wizard with his sights set on Arcane Trickster. My character has come up with a spell idea and I wanted to bounce it off the guru's for a mental play testing.

I compared it to Mage Armor.

Level 1
AC 4
Works against non-corporeals
1hr/lvl
No dex max for AC
No Arcane spell failure.


Nimble
Transmutation
Level: Wiz/Sor 1, Brd1, Asn1 (any other arcane casting class)
Components: V
Casting time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch? (I don't want it to be meta'd to Persistant)
Target: Creature touched
Duration: 1hr/lvl
Save: Will negates (harmless)
SR: Yes

(Flavor description)
Game effect:
Creatures under the effect of Nimble may ignore 5% arcane failure per +1 Dex modifier.
Dex 12 +1 5%
Dex 14 +2 10%
Dex 16 +3 15%
ect...

You could alter the spell to target the particular piece of armor instead of the caster. perhaps give it a magic missile type progression 5% +5%/2 LVL there after. I dissagree with determining the effect from there dexterity modifier, witch would probably be reduced by the armor.

At some poinst I agree with Voldrath.
You should not detemine the effect of the spell based on dexterity. The dexterity score can be boosted by items, templates (think about a half-fiend wizard) or spells (cat´s grace).

You should give the spell a progession similar to magic missile.
I recommend maximum 20 % at level 20. e.g. 5 % very 5 levels IMHO a wizard should not be able to wear a full plate without any arcane spell failure penalty.

I recommend range: self, so wizard of a party can not give the benefit of this spell to all of his companions.

I would raise the spell level to 4 because
- if every arcane spell caster you can cast 1st level spells get this spell, they wear armor and cast spells. Becaue of this they can lower their dex and raise other stats.
- The fighter /wizard combination becomes more powerful (You can play a Fighter wizard with high str and int and low dex because of this spell).
- This spell negates the special abilities of some PrCs e.g. Spell sword.
- If this spell is a 1st level spell you can make potions and wands of this spell.
