Transmutation

Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 1 round/level
Saving Throw: See text
Spell Resistance: See text

You are shrouded in a thin, bright green aura that vaporizes anything it touches. You and any creatures or objects touching your person during the spell's casting are immune to the effects, while anything else that touches you is effects as if by disintegrate, except that armor or other gear protects the creature from the effect. Thus, an opponent's armor bonuses count towards touch attacks; if the attack roll would have been a successful touch attack but is a failed unarmed attack, the creature's armor is destroyed (mage armor and bracers of armor act as if dispelled by dispel magic). The attack does not continue through the disintegrated armor because in retains its form just long enough to deflect the blow. Similarly, weapons that hit the aura are affected, but not before they deal damage.
Note: The spell cannot be voluntarily dismissed once cast, nor can the caster choose what objects are effected. Thus, a poorly clothed character under the effects of the aura could be tripped prone and freefall down until the spell ends.

Way too powerful. It combines a number of effects: a multiple-use lethal attack power, a potent defensive ability, and a utilitarian item- and barrier-destroying ability. (For the defensive ability, note that it's not limited to weapons; as written, any opponent that attacks with claws, bite, etc. will be disintegrated upon damaging the caster if the fail the save.) I'd class this as a 9th level spell.

Also, for the "free fall" effect: just how much of the ground do you disintegrate with your touch? The base disintegration effect is integral -- even the slightest touch destroys an entire object. So how big a hole do you cause if you fall? If you walk through a wall, how wide a tunnel do you create? This needs to be clarified.

Which is of course 9th level.
Prismatic SPRAY is 7th.

I would think it might be better to make a version of Disintigrate which was a touch attack rather than a ranged touch attack. (Not a huge change) then the character could merely cast the spell, hold the charge and ready an action to attack anyone who came near him. Same basic effect, not hideously overpowered, and involves a minimum amount of rules alteration, but hey, I'm a purist.

What I was thinking was that the following changes would be a one-level increase (from 6th to 7th):
- Medium range to touch
- Instantaneous to 1 round/level

I got this idea, honestly, from looking at the Whoever's frequent jaunt from the Magic of Faerun book (where "whoever" is whoever made the spell, I forget). It was 5th level and based off of dimension door, but with 1/16th the range (and useable as a move-equivalent action). So I tranfered Medium to Touch (actually touch is 5 feet and since 16x5=80 which is less than 100, the spell is less than 1/16th range), made it 1 round/level, and increased the spell level by 1.

Seems so simple but the move-equivalent thing doesn't transfer over. That's the rub. It also activates even when not used as an action (such as when hit). I'd say those extra advantages deserve to push it up to 8th level.

But this isn't any prismatic sphere. After all, the sphere has a disintegration effect tossed right in it!
