New Spell: Mystic Shield(revised)

Merlion

First Post
A new spell for your reading pleasure. its ment to represent the age old image of the mage throwing up a magic shield to negate attack. the Mys is for my Mystic class which you can find in this forum

Mystic Shield
Abjuration
Level: Mys 4, Sor/Wiz 4
Components: VS
Casting Time: 1 free action
Range:0
Target:You
Duration: 1 round
Saving Throw: None
Spell resistance: No

This spell creates a shield of pure magical force that negates attacks. This spell may be cast as a free action, just like a Quickened spell, and counts as your quickened spell for the round. The spell may be cast outside of the normal initiative order in reaction to an attack. The shield negates only melee attacks, and spells that require attack rolls and/or deal hit point damage. The shield may only negate attacks coming from in front of the caster. It will effect area affect spells as long as the center of the attack is in front of the caster. The caster may not cast spells or make melee attacks through the shield. The shield may only negate one attack per 5 caster levels, and if it takes more than 10 points of damage per caster level it collapses and any excess damage that round is dealt to the caster.

This spell creates a shield of pure magical force that negates attacks. The shield negates attacks from only one direction, and this direction cannot be changed. The shield will absorb all damage the caster would take in the single round of its existence from spells, physical attacks, and supernatural effects such as breath weapons. However if the shield is subjected to more than 10 points of damage per caster level in that single round, it collapses and any excess damage is dealt to the caster. a Disintegrate spell colapses the shield immediately, but does not harm the caster.

Okay, let me get this straight: you want to create a lesser wall of force, right? Here are some thoughts on that:

Since we are obviously emulating the wall of force spell, I would add material component: some powder made from a gem.

I assume that the rest of the spells listed in wall of force also affect this spell? If so: please list them properly.

Duration: seems a bit short, but then again it can also take a lot of punishment. Still, for a single round spell I might be tempted to move this to 3rd-level. After all there are other force-based spells there already. Although these don't appear in the PHB 3.5, but still...it could be an option. Also, I would add Dismissable to duration, because a block of force is going to be very unconventional if it's between you and escape, or even worse: you and your allies. And a full round (let's not forget that it extends to your initiative on the next round) can seem like a very long time.

I assume that the rest of the spells listed in wall of force also destroy it? If so, please list them as well.

The casting time seems appropriate, but I would add that you can only activate this spell as a free action if you are under attack, or on your own turn as a standard action. This is in line with feather fall, which is essentially another "instant protection" spell, that requires a specific condition to cast as a free action. Otherwise this spell could potentially be abused in a variety of ways if it was simply "1 free action".

Also that "under attack" part requires some reviewing, but I can't figure out a proper wording for it right now.

Then some other details: what happens if the caster moves before the force shield duration ends? Will it just burst like a bubble and end? Will it move with the caster? Range 0 seems okay, but what does it actually mean?

Does the spell cover one side of the caster in a field that emulates his shape or does it stand infront of him? How large is it? Can you throw a grenade-type of weapon over it, which would affect the caster once it lands behind him?

Okay, I think that was most of it. It's a handy looking spell. Although I would probably list it as "lost lore" or something like that, because it's also quite powerful.

No, its not a lesser wall of force, and its not gonna have no material components. its ment to represent a mage throwing up a mystic shield to block an attack, so it can be used reactively.
I revised it a bit and forgot to post the new version in here since no one has hardly replied to anything Ive posted here. i will include it, and redo the base post.
