New Spells: Cannibalize, Barrier of Reflection, Vengeance

Merlion

First Post
Well two more spells in my current vein of reflection-spell. Plus Cannibalize...I've long thought there needed to be a spell to let a mage sacrifice physical well being for magical power :-)

Cannibalize
Necromancy
Level: Sor/Wiz 4
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 full round
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: Instantaneous

This spell allows you to convert you’re physical vitality into magical power.
When you cast the spell you choose to take an amount of damage that does not exceed your current hit point total. You cannot cast this spell if you have 0 hit points or less. Temporary hit points cannot be sacrificed to the spell. For every 5 points of damage you take, you gain 1 spell level of energy that can be used to power your spells. For example, you cast Cannibalize and take 10 points of damage. You could now cast one 2nd level spell, or two 1st level spells that you know or have prepared without losing the prepared spell or unused spell slot.
Casting the spell also deals 1 point of Constitution damage to you. Casting it again in the same 24 hour period deals another 2 points of Constitution damage, a 3rd casting deals 4 points etc.
Lastly, for 24 hours after any casting of this spell, any Conjuration (Healing) spell cast upon you has only half its normal affect.

Barrier of Reflection
Abjuration
Level: Mys 8, Sor/Wiz 8
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close(25 ft +5 ft/2 levels)
Area: One 10 foot square per caster level.
Duration: 1 minute/level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

This spell creates an invisible ward that reflects magical attacks. Any spell, spell-like or supernatural ability attempting to pass through the barrier is immediately reflect back on its originator.
For instance, if a wizard attempts to cast a fireball through the barrier it will detonate with the caster as the center of effect. Effects which emanate directly from the originator (such as cone or line shaped spells or breath weapons) are reflected directly back as though the barrier were the starting point of the effect.
Objects and creatures can pass through the barrier in either direction normally.
The barrier is a 2-dimensional plane with a height and width equal to one 10 foot square per cast level, arranged as the caster sees fit. It has no thickness or depth. The barrier needn’t be anchored to anything, and it need not occupy empty space. It can be cast to cover the surface of a wall or door for instance, or used in conjunction with a wall of force spell.

Vengeance
Abjuration
Level: Mys 5, Sor/Wiz 5
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 1 minute/level

This spell causes anyone who successful harms you to suffer damage as well. Whenever you are dealt hit point damage, ability damage or negative levels in any way, the originator of the attack also takes half as much damage or negative levels of the same type. They may make a Will save to halve the damage again in each instance.
Also, if someone attempts to use an effect such as charm person, hold person, baleful polymorph or similar targeted non-damaging detrimental spells of 6th level or less upon you, there is a 25% chance that the effect will be negated and turn upon its caster.

Wow, canabalize is an awful spell. I can never see anyone using it. For starters it costs 4 spell levels of energy just for the spell slot. So to get a net gain, the wizard would need to pay 25 HP for 5 levels of spells. And 1 point of constitution. And all healing for 24 hours would be halved in effectiveness.

I also think that it dosn't fit in with the times in fantasy literature that mages drain themselves to power their spells. They generally do it to power spells more powerful than they could cast. What if they could take CON damage to apply metamagic feats to a spell (maximize, widen, heighten, empower...) There is a fort save or it is CON drain instead.

Wow, that was really rude.

For starters it costs 4 spell levels of energy just for the spell slot. So to get a net gain, the wizard would need to pay 25 HP for 5 levels of spells.

Your partialy right but 1) its not all about net gain. Some times you need a certain 2nd level spell, for instance.
Next, you can pay any amount of hitpoints up to however many you have. Especially once you've gained some levels, and if you have a good Con, as most do, you'll be able to get quite a bit of energy out of it.

And 1 point of constitution

I am probably going to change that. Have it only start dealing Con damage if you cast it more than once in 24 hours.

And all healing for 24 hours would be halved in effectiveness.

But, it still works. So you can still be something of a magical energy battery via multiple castings.

I also think that it dosn't fit in with the times in fantasy literature that mages drain themselves to power their spells. They generally do it to power spells more powerful than they could cast.

Depends on which literature. In many stories, any use of magic can be physically draining. The more powerful the spell, the more so. In some theres a concept like this spell..necromantically draining your own life energy to give you a magical boost.

This spell is actually loosely inspired by Everquest :-)

What if they could take CON damage to apply metamagic feats to a spell (maximize, widen, heighten, empower...) There is a fort save or it is CON drain instead.

Thats an excellent spell idea, but not what I'm going for.

So, how bout the other two?

Ok heres slightly revised versions of Cannabilize and Barrier of Reflection
