New to this, some questions

Pathfinder will last.

The core rule beta download had over 50,000 downloads. Of course, one can't infer anything really from that (such as how many actual bought the corebook and are playing Pathfinder rules) but the number is not insignificant.

The hard cover core rules was sold out days after release, requiring another printing, which has also sold out. If the printings were similar in size to the number of beta downloads (a not unreasonable assumption) then some 100.000+ copies of core rules have been sold, by my assumptions.

Paizo has said the sales of Pathfinder products have exceed their expectations. The Pathfinder lines have very high production values, a sign of a healthy company. That implies the number of people who have committed to Pathfinder has reached enough of a critical mass to sustain Paizo for the immediate future and probably for a long time.

Most people have by now pitched their tent in one (or more) of the camps of legacy 3.5, Pathfinder or 4e, which means that there most likely NOT be alot of 'desertations' from one version to another. Meaning, most D&D gamers have decided which version(s) of D&D they want play and companies can somewhat rely on their fanbase to carry their business lines forward.

5e will, of course, shake things up again, just like the arrival of 4e did. But 5e doesn't appear to be on the immediate horizon so no concerns in that regard.

Jump in and welcome.
