New Unearthed Arcana Brings Back Five Subclasses

Five existing D&D subclasses are getting a rework in a newly released Unearthed Arcana. Four of the subclasses come from Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, while the fifth is the Oathbreaker subclass for Paladins from the 2014 Player’s Handbook.

The revised subclasses are:

• Path of the Spiritual Guardian Barbarian (previously Path of the Ancestral Guardian)
• Path of the Storm Herald Barbarian
• Cavalier Fighter
• Warrior of Intoxication Monk (formerly Way of the Drunken Master)
• Oathbreaker Paladin

The Path of the Spiritual Guardian has received a revamped Spiritual Protectors ability with a choice of effects. The Storm Herald’s Storm Aura now scales with Rage damage and the Raging Storm now has redesigned environments. The Cavalier’s Unwavering Mark no longer has limited uses. The Warrior of Intoxication now has the ability to create potent drinks that grant abilities when drank. The Oathbreaker has received some updates bringing its abilities in line with the revamped Paladin’s ability.

The survey for the new subclasses opens on November 6th.

Thor is the enforcer of oaths. He can translate well as a kind of Storm Paladin with lightinf-thunder smites.

There are some stories about him manifesting a spell - but he prefers warrior combat. Still a gishy animistic Storm Cleric can work. I would definitely play it and use it to stat an avatar of Thor.

I mean, I'm talking about the film based on Marvel comics.

Warrior of the Brew Master.

That was cooler when I typed "Way of the Brew Master" before I remembered that they already stopped using "Way of..."

Which is also weird, IMO.

Yeah, we've lost the plot. Way was better.

I'm guessing Drunken Master or Drunk Monk didn't sounds right to someone.

I think it also brings up something I expected when they changed the name of Monk subclasses to "Warrior of _______" it would definitely force a rename of some subclasses. Kensei will probably be affected by this naming change too.

Juat to enumerate what we have seen in this series of UA 28 Subclass options, as opposed to 31 published in Xanathar'sand 29 in Tasha's:

• 1 from Tasha's (the Phantom Rogue)
• 4 from the PHB (the missing Wizards)
• 1.5 from SCAG (Arcana Cleric and sort of Undead Warlock as a replacement for the Undying)
• 2 from Van Richten's Guide (Spirtits Bard and Undead Warlock)
• 1 from the DMG (Oathbrraker, though it feels merged with Conquest)
• 8 from Xanathar's (sort of 9 if we count the Oathbreaker as a Conquest Paladin)
• 11 new, including a new Class with the Psion

Thanks for crunching the numbers! If we count the 8 subclasses in Psion and Apocalyptic as earmarked for a Dark Sun book and not the new Everything book, that means there's probably two further UA releases to bring up us to quota. Which is not too surprising, if it's not coming out till mid 2026 or so. Good to know for calibrating expectations.
