New Unearthed Arcana info

Uhm, I didn't see this mentioned anywhere else...

Chris Perkins mentioned, in the d20 Modern Seminar at GenCon, that Unearthed Arcana would be the first product from Wizards to be completely and totally OGC. I don't think there'll be an SRD for it (at least he didn't mention one) but he said everything is meant to be used by other publishers in whatever way they see fit.

Pretty nifty, if you ask me.

Wow. Thanks for bringing it up. That IS pretty cool. Can't wait to see what kind of worlds people might start creating with whatever alternate rules will be presented in it.

Damn, I'm looking forward to Unearthed Arcana more and more.

re: Damage Save:

if an attack hits, the defender makes a damage save with a DC = 15 + damage value of attack.
.

Sounds like an interesting an innovative system.

The one question that springs to mind is why did they produce a system where the damage value had to be added to 15 in order to set the save DC? A subtle plan to improve mental arithmetic skills?

Of course I'm only working on partial information here (thanks for the fairly detailed description though), but It would seem simpler to have just given weapons flat values like "rifle 22L" etc and missed out a step - or am I missing something important?

Cheers

Now, that IS surprising. Of course, if they reuse some bits from other publishers, it is only fair to do it that way.

The Damage levels are limited by your Power Level. Most characters start off as PL10, which means that the most powerful blast you can have does +10 (Whether it be from super-powers, sci-fi weapons, etc). You can probably find some ways to tweak it here and there, but not many. Hence the base Difficulty of 15. If you're just going by damage, than the Difficulty of a +5L hit would be 5. Who couldn't beat that? Even a Difficulty of 10 would still be pretty easy to beat consistently. Especially for those with high Damage Saves. Which is why they added the base Difficulty.

Also, you have to have a base Difficulty because damage can get reduced through various means. For instance, say you have Energy Blast +10 and you shoot someone with Protection +10. That means your damage is reduced to 0. In M&M, that means testing against a base Difficulty of 15. Without that base Difficulty, you wouldn't be able to do that.

But whatever the case, we're not talking about complicated math here. If your attack does 7, then just add 15 to get 22. That's about 2nd grade level.
