New "What sort of RPG player are you?" poll (this one by Charles Ryan)

You scored as Character Player.

The Character Player enjoys creating in-depth characters with distinct and rich personalities. He identifies closely with his characters, feeling detached from the game if he doesn’t. He takes creative pride in exploring different characters, often making each new one radically different than others he’s played. The Character Player bases his decisions on his character's psychology first and foremost. He may view rules as a necessary evil at best, preferring sessions in which the dice never come out of their bags. For the Character Player, the greatest reward comes from experiencing the game from the emotional perspective of an interesting character.

I scored pretty low as well. I guess that makes some sense since I so rarely play.

Which looks about right, though the blurb for "Character Player" (which I also got) really didn't sum it all up. Which makes sense, I guess.

I'm only a bit surprised about one part of the results: weekend warrior. I thought I'd get maybe 5%, if that. The top 4 look almost exactly as I would guesstimate them myself. The bottom 2, too.

The second try, I netted:

You scored as Tactician.

The Tactician enjoys opportunities to think his way through complex problems, usually those of the battlefield. He prefers realistic (or at least internally consistent and logical) rules and settings. He likes to be able to picture a scene in detail, so that he can make good decisions and reap their rewards—he particularly hates playing without a battle mat or miniatures. The Tactician becomes annoyed when other players make unsound decisions, or when they plow into encounters without thinking them through. For the Tactician, the greatest reward in gaming is a challenging yet logical obstacle for his character to overcome.

The first time around, it was similar, but Weekend Warrior was up a 65% and I think Tactician was down around 45%. It's probably a reflection of the fact that I haven't been seated with a table full of idiots at a con recently so my annoyances have been other players chickening out and handing over the gizmo of power to the intimidating bad guys rather than face a tough combat or having their occult slayers run around and beg for buffs (haste/enlarge person, ooh, ooh, pick me). My current experiment with playing a cleric (shadowbane inquisitor actually so not really a pure cleric) who only casts hero's feast on very rare occasions probably knocked my power gamer score down a bit.

Here's what it came up with for me.

Character Player 90%
Storyteller 85%
Tactician 40%
Casual Gamer 35%
Power Gamer 35%
Weekend Warrior 30%
Specialist 5%

The only result I find surprising is how low it listed Tactician. I'm generally the most tactically minded member of my group.

As for Specialist, that's spot on as I have no problem building whatever character niche is most lacking in the group. Since none of the players I game with are specialists, the unfilled niche changes from campaign to campaign.

So, how many characters do you gusy go through in a standard campaign? :p ;)

cheers,

You scored as Storyteller.
The Storyteller is in it for the plot: the sense of mystery and the fun of participating in a narrative that has the satisfying arc of a good book or movie. He enjoys interacting with well-defined NPCs, even preferring antagonists who have genuine motivations and personality to mere monsters. To the Storyteller, the greatest reward of the game is participating in a compelling story with interesting and unpredictable plot threads, in which his actions and those of his fellow characters determine the resolution. With apologies to Robin Laws.

I was surprised at how high the casual gamer was. I also had problems judging the questions, in that some answers would be "it depends". Such as the other member in the party going into a fight half-cocked. Were they bored (seen it, very bad call), provoked in character, or playing in character? It is hard to disagree with if it was in character but if they just wanted to kill something and ran into combat, they (usually) deserved what they got.

This seems about right:

Tactician 65%

Yep, give me stories and characters, have enough combat to keep the stickjockies happy, have many non-combat encounters, and be very involved in the game and the gameworld.

I'm kinda surprised at how extreme the results have been, it seems like almost everyone here is 85%-100% something, instead of being a mix of a bunch of stuff.

I expected to be a Character Player, since I tend to write up a dozen to hundred different characters for any game system, many with three or more pages of backstory (when you've got fifty characters, with backstories, written up on your website for a game *you never played* you know it's time to back away). :)

Instead my high score was Tactician. Freaky. I'm the least tactical person ever.
