New "which 8 classes are in PHB" speculation thread

I would rather see the Warlock than the Warlord or that is a more flexible version of the Warlock (ie not limited to lower planes). I hope the Monk is gone.

That would be a strong incentive to get people to sign up for D&DI early, but it would also create countless cries of "Why do I have to pay more money to get all the classes?! I didn't pay for an incomplete PHB!"

Eh. They don't have all the 3.5 classes in the PHB either.

Never said it was a view I agreed with ;) I would love to see that kind of content on D&DI shortly following the release of the core books.

If they break it up so nicely then I think they will do so by role (defender, leader, controller, and striker), rather than by power sources (i.e. arcane and divine)

Also. Things are so spread out over various sites and forums that I'm having trouble keeping up. The designers are already refering to these books as "PHB1". Did I miss a confirmation somewhere regarding multiple PHBs? I've seen it mentioned on forums, but wasn't aware it was a sure thing.

Yes, I gues that will be 2 defenders, 2 leaders, 2 controllers and 2 strikers. as fighter = defender, cleric = leader, wizard = controler and rogue = striker we should have one more of each role... we also know that the paladin is a defender, the warlord is a leader and the ranger is a striker and if they are in the phb1 what is missing is a non arcane controller.

I'm going to predict the remaining classes are Druid, Sorcerer, Ranger, and Paladin.

The Barbarian, Bard, and Monk are more niche concepts than the others. The Warlock and Warlord sound like Prestige Classes.

I strongly doubt that out of 8 classes 4 of them will be fighter based classes.

9 classes total.

This, and many of the above, are "divine" heavy and "arcane" light.

Of course, if you just swapped out warlord or druid for bard, you could get another arcane in there ;) .

IMO, if they want to support more than the 8 classes that are in the PHB1, they would be very well advised to rethink the number of classes in the PHB1. The problem is one that was faced by supplements for 3e - no print book can assume that the player base has access to any other book (or, in this case, the DI). So, if they want to use a class that's not in PHB1, they essentially have to reprint enough of the detail of the class to enable people to use it. That eats up page count on recycled material, which is a major issue in print. This became a huge issue for Dungeon, in particular, which found itself reusing the same handful of high-level monsters over and over again.

Plus, of course, anything that's not in PHB1 may well not be in the OGL, which of course means no third-party support either.

All that said, my predictions for the 'magic 8':

Fighter
Cleric
Wizard
Rogue
Warlord
Sorcerer
Paladin
Duskblade (or Gish, or whatever they want to call it)
