Yeah, I'm really appreciative of this gesture by WotC when they have so many constraints on their time.

They aren't going to sell many, due to the price constraints they are under - although whether this is self imposed or not is a matter of opinion - so it'll probably cost them money to make them available in this way to thsoe who want them.

Then, once 4th edition has become established, hopefully they will lower the prices and I might pick up a few.

I wonder what the chances are that they'll reduce the prices after 4E is released to $4.95, like all their other out of print editions?

I'm not hopeful, but one can dream, can't one?

Ridiculous pricing, still? To what end, I wonder.

It seems to me they could have made more money offering these at competitive (i.e., reasonable) prices - and that's what it's all about, right? Surely they're not trying to sell product for any other reason?

Oh well.

I have bought several of these

I spent the last year travelling around the world with a laptop, and bought the PDFs of several of these for games I was playing in via OpenRPG.

It would be completely impractical for me to carry my D&D books in my backpack, so I had no other choice.

A word of warning: There is something wrong with the PDF scan for Players Handbook 2. It basically hangs my machine whenever I open it; this problem has been reported by more than one person. So I wouldn't buy this one unless you have reason to believe they've fixed this problem.

The people at DrivethruRPG are great; they promptly refunded my money when I told them about the problem!

Well, when they first went online at full price, the reason given was that the intent is to sell to people who can't get print products.

Later on, after Charles Ryan left Wizards (and to be fair, after this, there were some discounted products after that, but only temporarily), he said something to the effect of "we think our products are too good for discount pricing." That might be two different ways of saying the same thing, but I think it reveals a bit of a different spin.

Of course, now the 4e PR team is busy telling us how sucky 3e is, so I think that reason B lost its teeth.

I fail to see how it's discount pricing when a PDF doesn't have the added cost of the actual printed book... Even a 5-10% price reduction would be reasonable, because customers aren't paying for the paper & binding that comes with the printed media.

And let's not forget that PDFs have fewer people in the distribution chain that have to be paid, meaning dollar for dollar, that $30 PDF is a lot more profitable than a $30 printed book...

But what do I know? :)

Yep. :\ Hence, the italicised 'still' in that quote. I know they gotta do what they gotta do, and all that, but I honestly don't get the PDF pricing. And that's not just because I would've bought some otherwise, either. ;)

Normal, acceptable PDF pricing seems to be around 50-67% of hard copy retail, unless I'm much mistaken. It's not a matter of Wizards of the Coast not having the right to charge whatever arbitrary amount they choose. It just seems, well. . . daft, to me.

Yeah, I hope there'll at least be some reduction. Pricing is a bit strange to say the least, as others have pointed out.

Does anybody know how complete the WotC 3e/3.5e collection is? Are there lots of products missing or has pretty much everything been done?

Pinotage

65 in the D&D section

23 in the FR section

and

14 in the Eberron Section.

The 3e splats are not there (sword and fist, tome and blood, etc. except Masters of the Wild which strangely has a 3.5 tag on it).

MMV is not there.

The fantastic locations and terrain products are not there and Hero builders handbook is not there.
