I will be traveling to USA, NY next week. I was wondering if anyone could point me to good game stores in the city.
When i was there couple of years ago, i found one close to the empire state building.

And also if u know of any rocks gyms. I would love to try some climbing in NY.

That's the Complete Strategist. It's on 33rd st IIRC. Not aware of any others off hand in Manhattan. You could check a phone book once you're there though.

The thread lives again.

Is the Compleat Strategist still the only FLGS in NYC? I should be visiting in late December and I'd like to visit it along with any others nearby.

Also I have details of Gamers Gambit in Saddle Brook NJ which is not far from NYC but I'd appreciate opinions as to if it would be worth the journey if I'm visiting the Compleat Strategist anyway.

Thanks.

As far as I know, it's just the Compleat Strategist. There might be a few smaller ones around, and a couple of the comic book stores might carry gaming products, but CS is pretty much it.

Out of curiosity, how is it that a city of ~300,000 like Lexington KY has 2 full-service dedicated FLGS, and a half-dozen comic/game stores that are also well stocked FLGS. . .but New York, NY, one of the biggest metropolises on the planet, with a population of ~8,000,000 only has 1 FLGS?

You would think that the largest city in North America, one of the 5 or 6 largest cities on the planet, would have more gaming options in it.

Retail space in Manhattan, hell in the five boros period is extremely expensive. Over the last 10 years here there have been huge big box stores going out of buisness and so many empty store fronts here in NYC. Not to mention stores that open one day and are gone in two to three months.

That coupled with the fact that RPG's are a niche hobby and there are about a million different things to do here in NYC besides gaming could explain why the CS went from 3 stores here in NYC in the 80's and early 90's to just the one...

Thanks for the info even if it's slightly disappointing.

While I figured it was related to the price of land/rents, it does seem surprising to me me that NYC cannot support more than one FLGS. Looks like I may be visiting Saddle Brook in NJ after all.

I think that if the CS sold only RPG's they would have gone out of business years ago. The fact that they sell all sorts of boardgames, miniature games and other game related stuff I think really keeps them in business.

I also think with the advent of online retailers who can sell the same things that they do for lower prices kind of hurt the idea of a gaming store as well. I think that the fact that they (the Compleat Strat) has opened their basement area to host space for RPG's and miniature games helps them a little, otherwise there would be absolutely no reason to spend money there.

Like I said there are more than a few factors contributing to why there's only one gaming store in NYC proper. If Games Workshop (who at one time had 4? stores open in Manhattan now there's only the one store down on 8th street) couldn't hack it? Granted I think that they might have spread themselves too thin too fast, but still it's Games Workshop.
