Newbie Campaigns

I think Age of Worms is pretty deadly, and while I think that Savage Tide will be deadly, you could easily tone it down...and/or just run the first few adventures and more on from there. No need to go all the way to Demo. What kid doesn't love fighting pirates?

I'd like to not run a DMPC, but that requires me to adjust anything I do even more to make sure they can survive it. Almost no campaign arc adventures assume three new players....I understand (I think) your hesitancy, but,

What is your suggestion for getting around that?

Potions, scrolls, or items that heal. Leave the decision to heal up in their hands. I know you don't mean it to be but subconsciously anytime the DMPC heals them, they are relying on Dad. Also, maybe give them some sort of device that has the function of Turning Undead (unless they have a paladin for that). Of course, if they have contacts they have made in town where most of this can be done between adventures, even better.

That's all doable.

how do they survive the fights with 1 barbarian, 1 sorcerer and 1 druid? I really don't want to have to re-write every encounter trying to make it fair for that small of a party.

thanks for all of your ideas so far, I would like to see them keep coming....

That can be a fairly tough party when an animal companion is included. Maybe you could just always give them maximum hit points, too. In the early levels, have them also keep hounds.

I've thought about running Savage Tide for my family (wife, 6 yr old & 9 yr old) but I know that some of the encounters would put them off as too serious or deadly. I know when we do dungeon crawls I lose them in about 30 minutes.

Why not take inspiration from a movie or TV series you all enjoy? Use a familiar novel or TV series, like Avatar or Narnia, as a jumping off point.

Another idea: while I know the sexual politics of Blue Rose setting isn't everyone's cup of tea, most of the setting (romantic fantasy) is light enough for younger children. It's set in an egalintarian society and the focus is on righting wrongs and solving problems. It has standard fantasy tropes like evil wizards and magical animals and such. THe ruleset uses a variation of True20 (a simplified version of 3.5 rules), making it easier to play and DM.
