At least the mother is sharing the fault of her son's condition. Not many parents would take responsbility to their children's addiction with computer games and/or video games.

The August Fortean Times has a few news bits about folks who died from excessive game playing. (Strange Deaths p31) The chap who writes the 'column' did note it sounds like an urban legend.

One young guy paralyzed from playing ice-hockey. They had a special group of similar youngsters (they called it a 'team') that was ruled by an older guy (he had a special title of 'coach'). They were addicted to playing too, they played like every day, among themselves or against other similar-minded groups. Canada has a big problem with these hockey-players.

Something has to be done.

A 17-year-old boy has been forced to miss school this semester after falling ill from playing online computer games excessively, according to his mother, who wished to remain anonymous

Just making sure I understand something - they gave the kids name but his mother wishes to remain annonymous? Some people have a strange idea of annonymous.

I'm not Drawmack I'm just some guy sitting at his computer and wearing his clothes.

"He played so hard he became sick, with purple lips and white eyes."

There were kids that looked like this when I went to high school. We called them "goths". They liked to listen to that "noise" I think the kids called Rock N Roll... I guess Marilyn Manson must play a lot of online video games too, huh?

``The game needs teamwork and somehow a child might think that if they stop playing the game it will be like leaving a friend in the real world,'' he noted.

This cracks me up. So are they saying that the people he is playing with are not real? That they don't live in the real world? Is the AI that advanced that he is really teaming up with computer controlled characters and he *thinks* they are real people?

General question... If you make a "date" (so to speak) to meet a friend online, whether it is on a game or a chat program, but you don't show up, how is that any different than making a "date" to meet at the mall and not showing up (other than the travel time involved)? The principles are the same.

Another thing that really gets me is when people say that meeting people on the internet is dangerous. That you never know who you are meeting. How is this any different than meeting someone at the mall, or the park, or a bar? People can lie about who they are at these places just as they can on the internet.

Sorry for the rant :/
