I'd guess that some folks here at the old ENW have read Eriksons Malazan Books of the Fallen and encounterd the concept of Warrens.

How would you define them? Just a plane? Something more? Less?

I have been noodling around with including them or something like them in my game and am having a hard time putting my finger on what they are.

1426 people are said to be logged in at this time and I bet at least one of them has some insight into my situmatation.

I have read the books in question (well, the first four, anyway; book 5 isn't in mass-market paperback on Amazon.ca yet, and I'm not going to ship a hardcover from Canuckistan), but I have no idea how you'd interpret Mazalan-style warrens in RPG mechanics. I think you'd need to be Quick Ben or Kruppe to do it.

I vaguely remember (so vaguely I might be making it up) reading something on another thread (don't even ask which one) about how the author intentionally made the "Warrens" very confusing and complicated (or something like that) and therefore it would be almost impossible to translate them into anysort of written rules. Of course, I could be talking out of my hiney hole.

Oh, and I only got about half way through Gardens of the Moon. Yeah, I know this is next to useless and I apologize.

minor spoilers!

I have spend some time on doing a Malazan Style campaign, here are some of my thoughts regarding the warrens (I am halfway through House of chains, so maybe there are some things I don´t know yet)

As I see it, the spellcasters draw directly on the wa´rrens to get the spell done. Most casters only have one or two warrens. Only the moste powerful can access more.
Every Warrens only gives a specialised sort of power (Denul being the Warren of Healing only gives access to Healing, Omtose Phellack the Elder Warren of Ice can not produce heat or fire).
The one thing you could do, is to assign every PHB spell to a warren. The casters could only draw on these.
The warrens have similarity to the plane concept, so you could say, that they are some kind of plane, interconnected with each other and with the prime material plane. Access to these planes is relatively easy (even Claws can open such a gate). Make it a skill, not a spell, to access the warrens and open a gate.
Every Warren has a Throne. The ascendant on the Throne rules the warren and gains its powers (eg. Kellanved & Dancer).
I have no clue, how to translate the relation of the holds and houses to the deck of Dragons and divining through the Deck.
