OOC: The confusion comes from your move associated with the blink. Since you were above the dust cloud, you did not move after the blink and remained at 30Z. That's why you took damage - the whirlwind extends up to 40Z. In this round I'll let you move to 50Z, then cast the cone of cold.

Lou casts the cone of cold as he blinks into the ethereal plane and it has no effect.

The whirlwind flies straight up 20 feet and the dust cloud goes away. Lou takes 3 damage from the winds (rolled 14 Ref save - half damage due to blink), but is not trapped by the whirlwind. (Rolled 18 Ref save) Lou has 23 hp left.

Lou utters a celestial curse at his luck while blinking, and backs a bit farther up into the air, repeating the gesture to evoke forth the cone of icy elemental power.

The whirlwind dodges the icy blast (rolled 24-2 Ref save) and takes 12 points of damage. It has 48 hp left.

The whirlwind turns back into a 16 foot high amorphous cloud at 30N35E20Z. It flies to 30N35E60Z and slams Lou (rolled 22-2, beat miss chance) for 12-5= 7 points of damage. Lou has 16 hp left.

Lou heals to 44 hp and flies up. The elemental hits with an AoO as Lou leaves for 8-5=3. Lou has 41 hp left.

The elemental flies to 30N35E80Z and misses. (Rolled natural 1)

Lou catches a small breath of celestial air upwards, and gestures back down with a third blast of elemental cold.

A five-foot step is not free if it is straight up (unless Lou had perfect maneuverability). The cone of cold will trigger an AoO in these circumstances.

Lou concentrates hard to evoke another effect while still dodging left and right. He envisions four balls of celestial light striking at the heart of the thing, but will it work?
