D&D 5E Night Hags and Succubi

gyor

Legend
Anyone noticed that Night Hags and Succubi are so simular in function and abilities?

Both can Shapeshift, both can move between the Ethereal Plane and the Mortal Plane at will, both corrupt mortals and hunt for souls, both are Nuetral Evil, and it even says in the MM that Succubi sometimes serve Night Hags.

Its a missed opportunity that the connection between Night Hags and Succubi is not explored in VGTM. Succubi makes more sense as Night Hag minions then any of the creatures suggested in the Hag section of VGTM, although I think Vargouilles make cool pets for both Night Hags and Succubi.

So aside from mythology, any possible connections between Succubi and Night Hags in origins maybe?

I could see an interesting encounter in a Brothel were the three gorgeous madams are really Night Hags and the staff Succubi/Incubi, the Party Paladin discovers that they're all Fiends and a battle insues, where Succubi and Hags pop in and out of the Ethereal Plane.

I see it that in the soul corrupting economy succubi are the smooth big corporate employee, working for someone else, usually getting paid commission etc. Where as night hags are self employed, hands on acquirers of valuable merchandise.

edit: an interesting in game effect might be a friendly rivalry between them with them each looking down on the other, better yet a real conflict. A succubus convinces adventurers to attack a hags lair as cover to steal her valuable merchandise of corrupted souls in the form of larva. If the hag works out what happened she may lodge a complaint with the succubus' superiors. A kinda uber evil corporate espionage episode.

That's an interesting take, playing the rivalry angle instead of the Employer, Employee angle.

And I would totally watch that show.

Honestly, I never thought about the connection between them much. Now I shall.

Thanks for the food for thought

I actually had an idea of a DMsguild product, basically something like Volo's Guide to Succubi or something, maybe a different FR character.

In would have been a Ethereal Despot, basically the child of a Incubus and a Night Hag Grandmother, that can join a Hag Coven, but also has incredible powers over the Ethereal plane. Succubi Queens use them to create bases in the Ethereal Plane, launching pads to corrupt mortals and cause mayham.

My other monsters I had concidered, updating Brachina and Lilitu as succubi that make deals with the Hells and the Abyss for greater power, at the price of eternal servitude, A Succubi Madam which would have been a Succubus who prays on other Succubi, transforming them into Broken Dolls, a form of Succubi that has had its mind and spirit so shattered it no longer has free will (CR 1 Succubi), Mithiril Seducers would have been a melee combat Succubus that fed a corrupted soul into liquid Mitharil, creating sentient living skin tight armour, Vargouille Sheppards which are Succubi who trade their life sucking kiss for power over Vargouille's and the Vargouille's kiss, Tainted Loves Succubi who have been warped by the Far Realms, Succubi's Kiss which are familiars created when casting Find Familiar during a kiss with a Succubus, Wet Wings basically newly adult Succubi whose wings are still too wet to fly (playable race), Vargouille Swarms, Cambion Knights, Apsaras Redeemed Celestial Succubi that spy on regular Succubi and seduce/distract evil doers from commiting actrocities, pretend to be fiends to noble fools who join cults to keep them from truely being damned ect...

And unique Succubi Queens like Zathrula is the Succubi Queen of Tainted Loves created when Malcanthet tossed a rival into the far realms, destroying her, but unknowingly creating Zathrula.

Pleasure Weaver, a Succubus raised to Queen hood by Lolth to fight in the Second War of Ripe Flesh.

Martyra a Succubi Queen whose father was a Solar and whose nature is to be damned and evil so others are not.

Snarloni the Succubi Queen of Ethereal Despots.

Modrraex the Incubus King of Dungeons, trapped in Carcus the Prison Plane, having taken the place of his Titan Father.

Jadzilnia the Succubus Queen of Aspara's.

Drosa the Pride Lord, an a lion like Incubus who rules over a hoard of Warrior Succubi and who dwells upon Archon trying to conquer it.

I was thinking of something similar, but accidental, where a night hag and succubus unknowingly target the same town, and the night hag unwittingly eats the child of the succubus, giving birth to... something really nasty and evil...
