"Irish actor Stuart Townsend is ABC's new Kolchak in the drama pilot "Night Stalker" with Gabrielle Union also joining the cast. Townsend is most remembered for his roles as Lestat in "Queen of the Damned", the devious Dorian Gray in "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and appearing alongside girlfriend Charlize Theron in the films "Trapped" & "Head in the Clouds". His only TV credit to date was his one-off appearance last week as a sexy 'pansexual' pastry chef who seduces both Will & Karen on NBC's "Will & Grace". "Kolchak" follows a reporter investigating various supernatural and supranatural creatures, ranging from aliens to vampires to Aztec sacrificial cults."

Ugh. Terrible casting choice. Kolchak is supposed to be old, bitter, cynical, grizzled. Not some namby-pamby pretty boy.
Have to wonder about the choice too, Kolchak also showed a lot of fear of the things in the dark and wonder if that will be lost. :(

Sorry, I still have fond memories of good ol' Darren McGavin that way.

Kolchak was a snoop, a reporter, nervous, had a strong sense of self-preservations (hey, a guy's only human!) and a very much inadvertent hero ... besides the fact that he was never believed about anything.

Personally, I'll hold out more hope for the Harry Erik Dresden series. ;)

Yeah, I think Stuart Townsend is a twit of an actor. Terrible.

The only thing that he did that was any good was ditching Lord of the Rings at the last minute on Peter Jackson, allowing Vigo to become Aragorn. (Nah, I am sure no one is kicking themselves in the balls for that one. Unprofessional loser.)

I thought Peter Jackson fired him.

But if he quit, well, then, yeah, he is the biggest loser. :p

My guess is they are trying to turn it into more of an X-files sort of show, than the original series.

While I mostly liked the X-files, Mulder & Scully looked more like models than FBI agents. But that worked because David Duchovoney, although sort of "pretty" like this guy, actually is pretty funny. And likeable.

I don't think either applies to this guy. In fact, he's the sort of guy that people seem to hate. He'd make a good villain, but not a good hero.

Anyway, I think Gary Shandling would make a pretty good Kolchak. (Dunno if he would want, though).

Or even Ed O'Neil...

No one can fill Darren McGavin's shoes. At least, they are not making Kolchak a woman in this version.
When I was first heared that they were going to do a new Night Stalker series, my first thought was to make the Kolchak character a woman.
At the end of the first movie, Carl's girlfriend was run out of Las Vegas and the final voice over stated that Carl was never able to find her.
My thought was that shortly after that movie the girlfriend discovers that she's pregnet and has a daughter. When she's older the daughter was told about her father and attempted to contact him.
The series would have started with her conning her way into a reporting job as a way of looking into her fathers disapperance.
