Nightwings

Anubis

First Post
Under the nightwing's attacks, the damage is 2d6+13 "and transformation". The Monster Manual says NOTHING about what "transformation" does ANYWHERE. There is no errata for the Monster Manual, so I have no way of checking for a typo.

What does this ability do, if anything? Or is it just a typo?

The party I play in (now lvl 13) encountered a Nightwing (twice, the first encounter I was the unlucky recipient of the Finger o Death and died, the rest soon fled)

The second time we (well, the paladin with his SUN-blade) killed it, and we had a damn tough time.

We all agreed that 'transformation' surely must have been some error... and should be disregarded since the nightwing is already extremely powerful...

Nightwings are originally a Mystara monster and the transformation ability does exist; it turns you into some kind of moth-thing or something.

Unfortunately I don't know the details, but one of my buddies has the old stats for 'em in storage somewhere, I'm sure there will be errata on this one.

According to the Mystara MC Appendix from 2e, the nightwing's bite turns the victim into a giant bat (as per polymorph other) that behaves as if charmed by the nightwing.

So there's the 2e stuff, simple enough to convert...

Sure does...The OD&D Rules Cyclopedia shows the same ability.
