"No Core" game

Since I'm avoiding core monsters, I thought I would report what the pcs did fight. ...Likewise, I'm going not going to be using magic items from the dmg except for weapons and armor with an enhancement bonus (since you need it to put other properties on a weapon or armor anyway).

Anyhoo, the party members are explorers who are checking out a new continent. They came in on a rowboat from a bigger ship a little further out in the harbor. There was a bunch of sea grass and marshy stuff between the water and the beach (where the water was about 4' deep or shallower). They moved up the bog towards the beach, but encountered a band of bullywugs (yay bullywugs, Monsters of Faerun!) After dispatching them, the pcs moved up onto the sand and then walked up into the forest ahead. It was pretty cold. Moving in, they encountered a bonesnapper (Tome of Horrors).

Good stuff!

What I learned during this game was that I need a "default list" of feats for my monsters to have based on HD and role. Otherwise, I have no idea what feats they should get!

I'll probably "Default assign" a few as the first tier of feats- Improved Toughness, for instance. :) Though I have to be wary of prerequisites.

I am in a game right now with no core classes; we have a Human Knight, a Human Scout, a Half-Elven Favored Soul, a Goblin Warlock and a Goblin Beguiler.

So far it has been really cool to see non-standards classes in play as they are completely new for everyone involved.

Love the idea of taking it all non-core, sounds intensive but fun.

NO CORE UPDATE:

I ran another spontaneous no-core game last night. There was a new pc- a dromite binder- and they fought a demonthorn mangrove (MM5) and a pair of terlens (FF). Good fun! A lot of time was spent on swapping out spells for the dread necromancer and elementalist (i.e. replacing core spells with spells from other sources), but otherwise, it was pretty standard.

Unfortunately, the party has yet to search or loot anything...

I've been thinking for some time now about playing a short high level non-core game as closing call on 3rd edition.

I'd propably use mostly ToB and Incarnum as core for the classes with a few select classes added in, MM3 and MM5 as Core monster books.

Still thinking which classes to use, but shifter and changeling seem quite likely.
